The Hawks waived DeShawn Stevenson Friday, according to a league source, in a move that clears the way for the team to announce the signing DeMarre Carroll. The forward agreed to terns with the nearly almost a month ago. The official signing of Carroll could come within the next day or two.

Carroll agreed to a two-year, $5 million contract on July 5th, the same day the team agreed to a deal with his Jazz teammate Paul Millsap. The delay in signing was for salary cap reasons as the Hawks rebuilt much of their roster this offseason. The Hawks were retaining Bird rights for several of their unrestricted free agents. However, Anthony Tolliver remains the only player that has not signed elsewhere or had his rights renounced.

Carroll, 6-foot-8, was selected in the first round (No. 27 overall) by the Grizzlies in the 2009 NBA draft out of Missouri. He averaged 6.0 points and 2.8 rebounds in 66 games last season. In Carroll, the Hawks get a hard-working wing defender with size. The Hawks hope that work ethic will be contagious for the number of young players on the roster.

“He is a tough-nosed player,” Millsap told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution last month. “Very competitive. Every second he’s on the court he is going to give his all, diving for loose balls. He wants to guard the best offensive player. Just his grit and how he approaches the game.”

In four NBA seasons, the 27-year-old Carroll has career averages of 4.2 points and 2.3 rebounds in 13.3 minutes. He figures to have an expanded role with the Hawks.

In Carroll’s first season at Missouri, after transferring from Vanderbilt, he experienced itchy legs that he was convinced was due to an allergy. However it turned out that Carroll had a liver disease that could one day require a transplant. He required medication but the issue has not slowed his on-court tenacity.

Now, with Greg Oden signing for the veteran’s minimum on Friday with Miami, another veteran free agent wants to join him.

DeShawn Stevenson, who was recently waived by the Atlanta Hawks, expressed his interest in joining the Miami Heat on Twitter Saturday night.

DeShawn begging for LeBron to tell Miami’s front office to sign him is beyond hilarious.

Ever since the 2008 playoffs when Stevenson was on the Wizards and James on the Cavaliers, these two have had bad blood. Stevenson swiped at James’ head in 2008 and ever since then, it has not been exactly a “great” relationship.

Even one of the most well known rappers got involved in this beef. During the 2008 playoffs Jay Z, friend of LeBron, dissed Stevenson in a remix to the song Blow The Whistle.

In 2011, when Stevenson’s Mavericks defeated the Heat, he wore a shirt dissing LeBron at the victory parade. The shirt read, “Hey LeBron! How’s my Dirk taste?”

Sure, Stevenson can hope he ends up in Miami on the veteran’s minimum, as he chases down another ring before his eventual retirement…but this situation is highly unlikely to happen in the first place. Better believe LeBron will not tell anyone on the Heat to sign Stevenson. Better yet, he will likely glance at the tweets and laugh.

Do not worry Heat fans; one of LeBron’s enemies is not likely coming to play for Miami. If he does though, that sure will be an awkward locker room with two long-time foes playing on the same team.

Not surprising since everyone seems to want to ride Lebron's coattails. Hell I don't even remember us getting this much attention from FAs during our title runs a few years ago.

Vet minimum in Florida vs Vet Minimum in LA is significant. Chop about 15% off the top for State Taxes and while expensive, Miami isn't as expensive overall than the nice parts of LA.

That's one reason..... the second is that I'm convinced that Mitch just wasn't interested.... even when someone wanted to come here we would never sweeten the deal even slightly it seemed.

I think Phil and Triangle was to blame as well. New players weren't going to just step into that system until Phil OK'd it. Combine that with the fact that it's a very difficult system to learn and that may have kept a few away. Also, Phil wanted a certain type of player and if you weren't it you may not see the floor even if the decision was made to come here.

Finally, I do think there is a real Kobe effect in this. For whatever reason Kobe is respected but not that well liked. Not unlike Jordan in his day actually.
