Billups hopes to ride coattails in Miami next season

Chris Tomasson

Chauncey Billups said he has interest in the Miami Heat for when he becomes a free agent July 1.
“Of course, I would have interest in Miami, of course,’’ Billups told FOX Sports Florida.

The Heat went after Billups after he was released in December 2011 as part of the NBA’s amnesty provision. However, the Los Angeles Clippers won the bidding process, and he has played with them the past two seasons.

It remains to be seen if the Heat, who are pleased with young point guards Mario Chalmers and Norris Cole, might be willing to bring in a veteran at the position. But Billups said he’s been watching the Heat and believes he could be an asset.

“Absolutely, I could help them,’’ Billups said before the Heat faced San Antonio after having lost the Finals opener last Thursday.

Not suprising. Would love to have had him on the Lakers but he has been way to injured lately.
For what it's worth, the Lakers also clinched the Pacific Division, an achievement Bryant dismissed by saying "We don't hang divisions." No, only the big NBA championship banners are considered wall-worthy for the Lakers.

I think he's done anyway. Won't help them overly much.

He's not going to get much playing time if any at all. The Heat have too many wing players with Cole, Chalmers, Wade, Allen, Miller. He was pretty good with the Clippers before he suffered that injury (achilles?) last season, but since then it's been injury after injury and when he's actually been on the floor he hasn't been very effective.

What the deuce is going on here? Is this now becoming a 'everyone wants to join Miami to win' thing? Jesus, talk about the team already being stacked and all... Must it become a Big 12 before there's no room?

Yeah, the league is getting ruined because players are willing to play for peanuts as long as they can play for Miami. Talk about trying to take the easy way out.

Payton and Malone came to the lakers for the same reason. It's been going on for a while now.

The remedy is to build a great and/or contending team, which attracts Free Agents. LA has had its fair share of success in attracting FAs.

Then, Payton & Malone must have started this trend. Even still, the amount of players that are willing to join the Heat have gone beyond a ridiculous level. Veteran players are just abandoning teams in hope that some superteam like Miami will sign them.

Watching Jordan in the NBA finals in the 90's, I've always wondered and kept thinking in my mind "Why don't other good/great players join Jordan and the Bulls? They're winning so many championships and yet no one seems to care."

The difference between LA and the present-day team(s) attracting FA is that LA was never able to get away with it by paying them peanuts (not counting Payton & Malone because that was the only time I can recall it happening as of late). Every FA that joined LA wanted money, not just the chance to play for championships.

They can take him, he'll be a Rashard Lewis 2.0 and get no playing time. Depends on him, does he want some PT or another ring. We'll see...

If he's able to have a healthy season he'd be a big addition. He's playoff tested, former Finals MVP, he'd immediately add to an inconsistent backcourt of Chalmers and Cole. Plus depending on how this finals goes, the Heat's roster might look a bit different next season overall.

malone and payton did start this trend, but it wasn't happening at all for the most part up until lebron and bosh signed with miami. that's when everyone wanted to bolt to south beach and take the easy path to getting a ring. the knicks are another example with melo and amare

Meh.....go ahead, not really worried about Chauncey at his age going there. I would be more concerned if Ray Allen went. Oh wait......!!

the last people who should complain about vets flocking to play for rings are lakers fans.

really, most of these old guys that take huge paycuts to join contenders are already done anyway. otherwise, some mediocre or bad team would have offered them enough money to make them balk at ring chasing.

billups looked cooked last year, so i wouldn't lose a lot of sleep over it.
