Bulls Close To Signing Nate Robinson

By Sam Amick

The Chicago Bulls are expected to sign point guard Nate Robinson, his agent, Aaron Goodwin, told SI.com.

The deal, which Goodwin said should be finalized "barring unforeseen problems," will likely pay the eight-year veteran the veteran's minimum of $1.2 million for next season. Robinson, who regained his form as a reserve for Golden State last season after playing just four games in the second half of the 2010-11 campaign with Oklahoma City, will join veteran point guard Kirk Hinrich in the Bulls' Derrick Rose-less backcourt after his recent return. Hinrich, who signed a two-year, $8 million deal last week with the Bulls, spent his first seven seasons in Chicago before he was traded to Washington in June 2010 and later traded to Atlanta in Feb. 2011.

None of which fill the huge void left by Rose, the 2010-11 MVP who tore his ACL in Game 1 of the first-round against Philadelphia on April 28 and, according to the Chicago Tribune, is likely out until March. Still, Robinson will provide some offensive punch for a team that now needs all the help it can get.

Robinson, the 5-foot-9 guard who is still best known for his three All-Star Slam Dunk Contest championships, averaged 11.2 points (42.4 percent shooting overall), 23.5 minutes, 1.2 steals and a career-high 4.5 assists per game with Golden State last season. If the signing does indeed take place, this will be the 28-year-old's fifth team since the 2009-10 campaign after he played previously with New York, Boston, Oklahoma City, and the Warriors.

Well the good news is that guards are starting to go for the vet. min. now and that means we may be able to nab a guy like Meeks for the vet. min.

I'm still wondering why the Lakers haven't reached out to a guy like Nate Robinson. He would be a MUCH better option at back up PG than Blake. Why can't our bench be on steroids?

Jordan Hill
Antawn Jamison
Devin Ebanks
Jodie Meeks
Nate Robinson
Josh McRoberts
Steve Blake
Christian Eyenga

Stupid steve blake...i hope we get rid of him somehow.

^ I think your right that Steve Blake's contract is preventing the Lakers from being aggressive in shoring up the bench. As sad as it is.... Nate Robinson, Antawn Jamison, and perhaps what Jodie Meek's is slated to make this season (minimum) is equal to what the Lakers are paying Blake.

What makes it even more sad is that Blake and OJ Mayo are going to get paid the same too. :toilet3:

CHICAGO (AP) -- A person familiar with situation says the Chicago Bulls and point guard Nate Robinson have agreed to a contract.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal had not been announced Monday.

The three-time slam dunk champion regained his form with Golden State last season after playing in just four games with Oklahoma City the previous year following a midseason trade from Boston. The 5-foot-9 Robinson averaged 11.2 points and 4.5 assists for the Warriors.

He joins veteran Kirk Hinrich at the position as the Bulls try to get by without Derrick Rose. The former MVP is expected to miss a big portion of the season while recovering from knee surgery.

Hinrich is in his second stint with the Bulls after signing with them last week.

Seems the Bulls have been signing a player every week.
Vlad
Nate
Mohammed
Belinelli
Kirk

All are good pickups, but they've had a horrible off-season. They've lost more than they've gained. I'm not even sure they'll make the playoffs.

I think they still make it in the weak east. I think atlanta takes a step back losing johnson. I don't think howard ever puts back on a magic uniform so see the magic also taking a step back. I think kirk at PG and nate off the bench gives them just enough to maintain .500 long enough for rose to come back to save the day.

Robinson is a strange case..... a guy that is in his prime and can legitimately score 20 a night along with 6 to 8 assists if he started going for the minimum.... He must really be a jerk to have bounced around as much as he has.....

On our bench he would have provided the first real threat to score on a consistent basis that we've had for 20 years.... Jamison fills that bill now but it would be nice to actually have a couple starters on the bench with the age and fragility of our starting lineup.....

They didn't get worse IMO. They lost Brewer, Korver, Watson, and Asik, but they added Hinrich, Robinson, Belinelli, and Mohammed. I'd say they're equally as good.

It's possible, just not sold on it. Someone else will probably get hurt, whether it's Noah, Booz, or Deng remains to be seen. And anytime you have to rely on a heavy dose of Boozer, he's bound to disappoint. They would have been much better off with Asik and Gibson as their starting frontcourt instead of the overpaid Noah and Boozer pairing.

But looking at the playoff picture right now, here's the locks: Heat, Celtics, Knicks, Nets, and Pacers.

After that, I think Philly gets in, even without Lou and Brand.

Hawks might've taken a step back without Joe Joe, but it was a baby step. They'll have a more balanced team, less iso with JJ. Harris, Lou, Stevenson, Korver, and Morrow is a hell of replacement for his production. I think making Horford more of a focal point is better for the team.

And I think the Wizards have a damn good shot at making the 8th seed next year. Oak, Nene, Ariza, and Beal should be enough to push Flip's team into the post-season.

I think Bucks have a chance to be on the bubble, too. Probably behind Wizards and Bulls, but depending on how things bounce or injuries, I wouldn't rule them out.

I'm not sold on Kirks ability to plug the hole in the ship. He's fallen off quite a bit since last time he was in Chicago. I used to think he would have been the perfect PG for us, especially when Phil was here. Now, I wouldn't touch him with a 20 foot stick. Nate's as unpredictable as they come. I think they made a big mistake in letting Watson go, I don't care how bad of a post-season he had, he was reliable, defensive minded, and cheap for them. He did as good as anyone could have for them in the regular season without Rose.

:man3:

Let's look at the replacements...

Going from Asik to Nazr is a monumental downgrade. Many consider Asik to be the best man-to-man defender at the C position, at the very worst he's a top 3. He's getting paid for that too in Houston. The most Nazr ever pulled in was $6.8m in 2011. Nazr isn't exactly known for his defense. He's also coming off an atrocious year in OKC. If one of Chi Town's other bigs got hurt, they could start Asik, you can't start Mohammed under any circumstance if you want to win the ball game.

Watson - Hinrich: Another downgrade. If this was Kirky from 2-3 years ago, that's another story, but it's not. He battled injuries here in Atlanta and looks noticeably slower on both ends of the court. The drop off isn't as big as the one at the center spot, but it's still a drop off. 11 & 5 as a starter vs. 8 & 3, Scored 15+ 12x vs. 2x. Kirk has the higher IQ, but I'll compare him to Fish, you can be the smartest player on the court but if you can't physically keep your man from beating you, it doesn't matter if you have the highest IQ or not if you're getting burned on D.

Korver - Belinelli/Vlad: I'll give the Bulls this one. Not a one of these three can play a lick of D. However, I think Korver is still the more feared threat. Part reputation, part he still can shoot the hell out of the 3 ball. He finished 10th in 3pt% with 43.5% and 10th in makes with 118. That said, they can't play both Vlad and Belinelli at the same time, so they don't get the shooting from both of them. If they did, they would get destroyed on D, Thibs wouldn't allow it.

Brewer - Nate: Simply put, Nate is always a question mark. Never know what he's going to do from one night to the next. Brewer can start, Nate can't. Brewer played D, Nate doesn't.

Bulls lost three of their best defenders and replaced them with 3 defensive liabilities, a subpar backup C defender, and a has been defender in Kirk. On a defensive team like Thibs, that's a HUGE problem. They lost 3 starters (counting Asik cause if they didn't have the overpaid log jam they have up front, he'd be starting and will be in HOU) and only one of their new acquisitions has any business playing a single second as a starter (Kirk).
