Carmelo Addresses Selfish Label, Talks Where It Began

Carmelo Anthony addressed the widespread notion that he's a selfish player, pinpointing in his mind when the "Anthony is selfish" meme began.

"Let's be frank about it," he said. "When it comes to the Knicks, we're talking about one particular point in time. We're talking about the whole Linsanity thing. That's when it started. That's when it started to escalate as far as people saying I was selfish."

Jeremy Lin led the Knicks to an 8-1 record while Anthony was out with an injury last winter.

The Knicks stumbled when Anthony returned to the lineup, leading Mike D'Antoni to resign.

"Lin came and we started winning games and then we started losing games, and they could only point to one thing, which is me, the leader of the team," Anthony said. "They're not going to point to Amar'e (Stoudemire). They're not going to point to (guard) Iman Shumpert. They're going to point to me. I accept that. It doesn't bother me."

Carmelo is selfish. He's not a team guy.

I'm not so sure.. I think that's unfair to say of him. What makes you think he's not a team guy?
The only reason why I'd think he wasn't serious about winning is because he's always smiling and kinda laughing, all the time, but that could just be the way he is..
I haven't seen a big game he played when I thought "man this guy is selfish / doesn't care about the team". And I've watched him plenty, especially in the playoffs.

I was just saying that to be contradictory.

I was pretty sure people called him selfish long before the whole Jeremy Lin thing.

I've never considered him a selfish player. He can fill it up. But I guess that's to be expected when you're resting on defense.

I think the Selfish label started when he didn't pass the ball. It is like a black hole, you give him the ball, and he goes one-on-one. Linsanity? Give me a break. Melo was hogging the ball in Denver. If he was a better teammate, maybe people who call him selfish...won't. He can be a great player, but still need to share the ball and get other guys going instead of only himself.

I don't think Melo is selfish, but I've always just considered his game somewhat one-dimensional.

He's AMAZING at doing the one thing he's best at, which is scoring ... but if you take that away, he isn't much of a factor in other aspects of the game.

Whereas, if you take Kobe's scoring away he can still lock you down and rebound (i.e. 2010 Game 7 against Boston) ... if you take LeBron's scoring away, he still can create opportunities for others with his passing.

Slava laughed at the suggestion his skills might be affected by the down time. "Are you kidding?" he said. "Basketball is like ball. It's all a circle."

BEST VIDEO EVER ... AND AND THE SECOND BEST.

Yeah Melo is probably the best pure scorer in the NBA along with KD and Kobe, but until he starts playing defense he won't ever win anything.

^ You could argue that he did improve defensively last season.. IMO he was more willing to play serious D and he was effective from time to time. He's still got long ways to go, and so did the whole Knicks squad -except for Chandler and Shumpert-, though the additions of Kidd, Prigioni, Brewer, Camby and Thomas should change that quickly.

What BDG said. I don't really consider Melo selfish. He just doesn't really contribute anywhere else. He does one thing really well - score. He's not a play maker, so so defender, ok rebounder when he wants to be, not really the leader type either. He is what he is.

Well I just checked Melo's stats. He had the highest defensive rating of his career at 102.

Yeah we've been hearing this on and off long ago, well before he became a Knickerbocker.

That should tell you all you need to know about that statistic and most of the other "designer" statistics.....
