Didn't Barkley leave early? So 2 years is good but 1 isn't? And he's the authority on this? Why?

I agree that a person can benefit from the college experience (formal education, life experience, personal growth / maturity), but a person can get a lot of that in the NBA and can go back to college later on too. They can go back to college in 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 years. However, the window for an NBA contract is limited.

The NBA isn't a place for learning the game. It's a professional league. The difference in guys like Barkley leaving early and 75% of the draft class leaving early are not quite the same. In his day you only left early if you had proven the ability to be able to make the jump early.

Today it's one and done for so many and the Agents are pushing kids to jump based on getting 20% of that first contract…. Teams are left with an athletic competition in the form of the combine crap and projecting data from a limited college career against vastly inferior opponents….. it's a crap shoot….. with spreadsheets now days……

the nba is saturated with talent right now and the gap between college and the NBA has grown much wider IMO. getting rookies younger only gets them paid earlier. i'm not sure what the benefit is other than a team holding on to someone's rights.

most rookies right now are just training/learning on the job where i prefer to have guys who are ready to play right away. i mean, this year's rookie class is obv full of potential, but there isn't a clear cut ROY. it'll be years before we see who is the best of this class.

yes for the players it financially doesn't make sense, but this isn't about the players. this is about the NBA. given the demand for spots in the NBA, the NBA is in a position to filter and restrict access. in this day and age, it only makes sense to make the requirements more stringent to filter out weak talent.

I've never understood the rule that a player can't go straight from high school to the pros anymore. I mean this is Amercia, THE free market capital of the world, where people can do whatever they want to make money. And here is the NBA saying you have to stay at least one year? I've never understood this. I mean you can join the military after high school and kill people but can't join the NBA? I mean who are YOU to tell a tell a kid he can't take his talents to the NBA right out of high school? This is business. The NBA wants to draft this guy and sign him because of his talents and the league is saying you have to stay one year? Utterly ridiculous rule. I thought this was a capitalist society.

^^I agree on the purity of that argument.... however the bulk of the ones doing it are being preyed upon by Agents. "Free" may not be the best word to describe it.

The result is the quality of the game has come down overall. Kids who aren't ready getting paid so they have to play.

the precedence was set by college football, and the nba slid their foot in the door w/ the one year rule.

as far as being a capitalist society, it would be in the best interest of the NBA to not pay players to train and mature, and to only pay players after they have fully matured. business-wise it makes 100% more sense to recruit older and mature players.

I'm not a fan of the one and done rule, a kid should have the opportunity to get a job straight from high school especially if there's a spot for him in the NBA. However, if the NBA continues to insist in having this rule I'd rather they make them stay two years instead of one.
