If that was true, and it isn't, then the Lakers mgmt would not have felt the need to pursue better options at PF and PG. Bottom line is, with a Shaq at 60%, we're not good enough to beat the Spurs.
Clearly, losing not only in the playoffs but the regular season should show us that teams were starting to catch up. We were dead LAST in opp 3pt% last year... at 38%. We let teams shoot 38% from behind the arc on us. NOT GOOD.
If the Spurs last year, were not better than us, then why the need for a team change? Just give Shaq his max and sit back... No. They knew the Spurs and Kings were a better team last year and as a result, HAD to make the change to remain competitive.
