The Lakers also inquired about Charlotte free agent Byron Mullens on Sunday night, per a league source.

He's probably of equal or greater value to Hill actually. He's still 7 feet tall and fairly athletic. He showed some good things last season in Charlotte. He's not a great player by any stretch, but certainly he'd be a good addition and if Howard leaves he might be the best Center we could get in Free Agency realistically.

^ He could also work as a stretch four. He didn't shoot a terrific percentage from out there, but it's an interesting idea. Or if they decide to trade Jordan Hill for value, then Mullens would be a very capable backup.

I think you're right though, I think he's more of a contingency plan.

Between him and Dalembert, we do need a big body off the bench.

Mullens played PF last year. This might not be a contingency plan for D12, it might be a move that has to do with Pau's status as a Laker.

Alright. I'm going to go bananas here. Get ready.

1. Phil announced in official capacity as VP adviser to the Lakers, will have say in coaching and personnel development. BOOM.

1. Re-sign Howard and the first domino falls.
2. Amnesty Artest, his time is over here.
3. Trade Pau for Granger. OH DAMN.
4. Sign Howard's friend Monta Ellis to the mini-MLE. WHAT.
5. Use the TPE gained from trading Gasol to sign Mullens. HOLY.
6. Sign Garcia, Budinger, and Jordan Farmar to minimum contracts. BUNS.
7. Success. AHHH!

Nash/Blake/Farmar
Bryant/Ellis/Meeks
Granger/Budinger/Garcia
Mullens/Hill/Kelly
Howard/Sacre

8. Win Championship.

Smart to be reaching out to guys like him & Brandon Wright. A lot of uncertainty in our front court. Will Dwight re-sign? Will Pau be traded? Will Earl Clark get a bigger offer from the Cavs & bolt? Will the rookie be any good? Will Jordan Hill be able to stay healthy this year? Guess that goes for all of them. Point is, it's never bad to have options if things don't go as planned.

I would take Mullens over Pau at this point -- Youth+potential >> than Pau's passive aggressive and now aging/injury prone game.

:man10:

to be fair it's based off of what his agent has told people: he's willing to sign for significantly less than he's worth to play on a contender. That's what his agent told the Knicks anyway.

It's all BS to posture for more money, but hey! A man can dream.

He's had his moments and still has potential. A guy 7 feet tall weighing 275 pounds shooting 38.5% FG though? Don't think we need that.

He could be of value, pau has a big expiring contract. Top asset for trading. He could serve as a back up or succession planning either not a bad chip to have.

Same here lol... Personally, I don't want Monta and I don't think he'll sign for a MMLE either.

You can replace that step with Stephen Jackson until Kobe is right

I already explained my Monta Ellis bit.

And do you really think you could match anything Ellis does with Stephen Jackson?

I'm not suggesting that, I think he just wouldn't fit in your scenario. And believe me, I want your scenario to work, lol.

Maybe you can link me to your Monta explanation, but I'll give you my 2 cents -

Yes, I know Monta's younger, quicker, and could create his own shot. Probably among the best finishers in the league too. But I think he needs a ton of shots to be effective (a touchy topic in Lakerland), his shot selection is Kobe-esque (without Kobe's shot) and his decision making is suspect.

I have many cousins who are born & raised in SF, die-hard b-ball/GSW fans, and they rejoiced when they traded Monta for Bogut. Monta makes lots of spectacular plays, but he also makes many boneheaded decisions that takes his team out of contention.

At the least, Jax would provide veteran presence, a 3 pt shot and defense. He can occasionally handle the rock in plays where you want Nash to be an off-ball shooter. If you want Monta to play occasional PG then I'm really not on board with that step, lol.

Also, I just think Jax is a winner than he doesn't take BS. I want a guy like that in the same locker room with Dwight. Outside of being Dwight's homie, I don't know if Monta can help team chemistry.

Alright a couple things.

1. Monta Ellis's agent said he'd entertain taking less money to play for a contender. He was referring to the Knicks and the mini-MLE. I thought if he were willing to do it for New York, why not LA? Obviously it was posturing by his agent and obviously I was kidding about him coming here.

2. Stephen Jackson at this point in his career is almost nothing like you describe. He's not a good influence, he's not a great shooter or shot creator, he was cut from San Antonio because he wasn't a good locker room presence, and I'm not sold he's a winner. Not to mention he doesn't get along with Kobe because Kobe routinely crushes him.

3. Monta might be all of the problems you described, but we need someone who can create their own shot consistently. I don't think Monta can get here, but if he wanted to get here, I'd be ecstatic to sign him. He's not perfect, but he's a great fit. And him being friends with Howard doesn't hurt either.

All things considered, I'm still under the impression of "we need all of the help we can get". As the team stands, of course I would welcome Monta here.

But in your "bananas scenario" where we have Granger, I think his talents would be superfluous. I also think he'd be frustrated being in a very limited role. I think Phil Jackson himself would have a devil of a time trying to balance Monta's & Kobe's ego's once the latter returns. And to be honest, I'd be confident going into the season with

1-Nash/Blake/Farmar
2-Meeks/Garcia & spot minutes from Nash
3-Granger/Garcia/Barnes

for 2 months until Kobe returns

I threw in that S.Jax bit just because of a rumor of him wanting to sign here. Also under the premise that he'd stand down once Kobe got back. Even a loose cannon like Jax should know this is Kobe's team. And if we got 20 mins of spot up threes and at least consistent defensive effort, I'd say Jax is worth it.

When I heard Monta would take a pay cut, I imagined 11m/yr to around 8m/yr, not 5m/yr. Cutting your salary in half seems like more than a pay cut lol. But after doing some googling & "sources saying" that Monta would take less money & pair with Dwight, I guess anything is fair game.

But at the end of the day we're splitting hairs on a pipe dream. I'll take any of those scenarios!

Regarding Mullens, him being a Bobcat, I've seen VERY little of him, so I can't say if I like him or not. We are currently beggars though, so if he wanted to come here for cheap it would probably be the best we could do, based on just looking at his averages.
