Dr. J documentary to air on NBA TV in June

NEW YORK (AP) -- An upcoming documentary will look at the life and career of Julius Erving, on the 30th anniversary of his only NBA championship.
''The Doctor'' will air on NBA TV on June 10, between games of the NBA Finals. The 90-minute program features rare footage from his ABA career. Dr. J later came to the NBA and helped the Philadelphia 76ers win the 1983 title.
One of basketball's best-known high flyers, the Hall of Famer reflects on his high school days in New York. He ended up back on Long Island with the New York Nets of the ABA.
Miami Heat president Pat Riley says, ''Unless you played against him or unless you watched him in his prime, you didn't realize how great he was.''

The "original" Fear The 'Fro... I'm looking forward to this. Thank you.

On "NBA at 50" loved Tiny Archibald's comment about Erving... "They called him The Doctor because he operated on people."

I'm glad they're finally doing a documentary on him, he's one player I've always been interested in learning more about.

Nobody better in the open floor..... No one.

Took Elgin Baylor's game to the next level. Massive hands and 42" vertical along with shot making ability and a great understanding of the game all wrapped up with the "parachute" Afro.

Finally saw the Doc doc! Sooo good!! :jam2: He was truly the coolest basketball player ever (besides Kareem for me). Suave, articulate, and an absolute monster on the court. And the FRO!!

Saw the last 20 minutes or so. Even the wife was interested. Good stuff.

Yes, the thing that stood out from it all was his level of intelligence. His interviews had some gems. Not the kind of stuff you hear players saying nowadays.

As a kid, I remember everyone loving Dr J. You could hate the Sixers but you loved Dr J.

His 83 Sixers were the best team ive ever seen.

Eloquence...class...grace...Erving had them to go along with status as an NBA icon. The touching parts of the piece was how he dealth with the adversities of dealing with the loss of his brother and son. Seeing those clips of Erving just flushing it on defenders [Walton, Gilmore, Jones, Cooper] grills gave me goosebumps. Seeing him cry unabashedly at his last Nets' appearance during his retirement year made him more human than most.

I watched it today. Man, I really felt for him when he was talking about his younger brother and his son who both died at age 19. They did a great job making that documentary.
