Kobe Bryant for me. No one and I mean no one can go on the scoring bursts Kobe had during the 05-07 seasons. He was absolutely unstoppable.

It's too premature for me to call Kobe a better scorer than Kareem or Malone.

"Best Scorer" can be defined in a number of ways.

Kareem dropped over 23 ppg at age 38. Karl Malone was over 22 at age 38. Kobe may be there in a few years..... they again he may not be playing at 38. Kareem and Malone were the most effective scorers in the history of the game for the longest time. Consistent, reliable scoring night in and night out.

There are your points in bunches guys like Kobe, Jordan, Gervin, Iverson Dr J., Baylor and Wilkins.

Then guys that did it consistently but weren't flashy like West, Alex English, Dan Issel, Adrian Dantley.

And then pure domination guys like Wilt and Shaq.

If you define it on a PPG basis it's Jordan with Wilt an eyelash behind.

If it is by total points it's Kareem

I'll go with Kareem because he's got more points than anyone else.... and isn't that the mark of a great scorer?

Wilt and it's not even close.

Even if you say wilt was going against inferior talent...the man one was putting up 50 and 25. 50 pts in today's game gets you a top spot on ESPN. Wilt was doing it on a consistent basis. Not to mention the 100 pt game as well. The stamina it takes to do that is amazing.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar...scored at will with one signature shot in limited floor space and facing defenses geared to stop him game after game dating back to kindergarden.

The thing is that Wilt's scoring wasn't doing anything for his teams. In fact he made them worse offensively.

A lot of information has come about over the past few years that shows just how overrated Wilt was in the early years of his career. It wasn't until he learned to stop dominating the ball and became a defensive anchor that he started winning

Trying to decide between Kareem and MJ...I think I'll go with Kareem just for the hell of it

Jordan lead the league in scoring 10 times. He lead the league in scoring 7 times in a row. He has the highest scoring average at 30.12 ppg. He's 3rd in all-time points. He's the all-time leader in point scored in the playoffs. He also has the highest playoff scoring average.

It's not MJ's fault really that he was in an NBA era of man-to-man & iso's. I would have him tied with Kobe thinking that he will have adjusted to today's defenses. MJ was fortunate enough that major NBA rules were never created or changed BECAUSE of him, IIRC. With that, I would have had Wilt (3 second violation) and even Shaq (allow zone defenses, I think) over MJ but because of their inability to make FT's, I didn't.

Kareem, IMO, by far is the best scorer of all-time for me. That sky-hook is money, whichever era it may be, and he makes his FT's, too.

T4. Wilt/Shaq

If Jordan hadn't taken the time off this might not have been a topic.

By that logic why didn't you vote for Wilt? He averaged 50 points a game for a season....

My take is scoring over time is more impressive than what Jordan did. Malone and Jabbar did scored at an amazing rate late into their 30's. That's pretty impressive to me. Jordan was amazing but having the most points has to be the mark IMO.

Well, I obviously don't just look at one single season or Rick Barry would have to be in the conversation somewhere. A single season of 50 ppg wasn't enough for me to propel Wilt to the top. Jordan was able to be elite for his entire career.

Jordan has not only the highest ppg in the regular season but also the playoffs. Unlike Wilt, 6 of Jordan's scoring titles translated into championships. Wilt's scoring averages routinely went down in the playoffs. He averages 30.1 ppg in the regular season and 22.5 ppg in the playoffs. Jordan's went up from 30.1 to 33.4.

I don't really have a problem with people voting for Kareem, who was consistently an elite scorer for almost a 20-year span. I expected the votes to be between Kareem and Jordan with some Kobe, but it's just extremely odd that Jordan had only 1 vote (at the time) out of almost 20.

prof_tolomi makes a good point about the rule changes though.

the term "scorer" is thrown around. when we hear that term we automatically think of kobe, mj, iverson, dr j, t-mac, etc. we rarely think of the big guys like kareem and malone, when in reality they're the ones who should be called scorers but they also had other features to their game. whereas the "scorers" we always think about had only one main aspect to their game and that was making baskets

MJ. He could put up his field goal percentage/points in any era, thats what differentriates him and WIlt.

No chance Kobe is the greatest scorer of all-time. Hes probably the greatest scorer when hes "HOT", but on a night to night basis MJ was way more efficient.

If we're talking strictly about efficiency and consistency, Kareem is probably the only choice.
