Clippers Continue Eric Bledsoe For Arron Afflalo Talks With Magic, Waiting On Better Offer

Image

The Los Angeles Clippers have held ongoing talks with the Orlando Magic on a trade involving Eric Bledsoe for Arron Afflalo.

The Clippers prefer to hold onto Bledsoe in the interim in hopes of landing a better offer, according to sources.

Afflalo is owed $23 million over the next three seasons.

The Orlando Magic and Los Angeles Clippers are discussing a draft-day deal that, according to SportsCity's Mark Heisler, would send Eric Bledsoe and Caron Butler to Orlando for Arron Afflalo along with possibly Andrew Nicholson and, potentially, a future protected first-round pick.

Bledsoe, Chris Paul's primary backup, has been rumored to possibly be trade bait as long as the Clippers are able to convince Paul to re-sign with the team rather than heading somewhere else during free agency. Many believe that the Clippers moved a lot closer to doing just that with the trade for Doc Rivers, too, so it makes sense that more details of this trade are coming about.

Heisler also indicated in his report that the Clippers are searching for a stretch four to play alongside Paul, lending some credence to a HoopsWorld report from Steve Kyler that says Orlando may also have to package Nicholson with Afflalo to make the Clippers deal work. Kyler also indicates that a future protected first-round pick could shift from Orlando to Los Angeles, but that doesn't seem as likely.

Nicholson averaged 7.8 points and 3.4 rebounds in 16.7 minutes for the Magic last year after being a first-round draft pick out of St. Bonaventure. Draft night could get a bit awkward for him if this trade happens, though, because Orlando Pinstriped Post cites a report saying Nicholson is expected to be in attendance for the Magic's official draft party.

I hope so. It would mean keeping Eric Bledsoe this summer in my dynasty draft was a great choice.

Caron was really average except when he played us. He wasn't great for them and definitely not at that price. Afflalo is a really, really solid piece for them. It's a good trade.

Ramona Shelburne, Marc Stein and Chad Ford of ESPN wrote:The Orlando Magic and the Los Angeles Clippers have been discussing the possibility of completing a trade headlined by Magic shooting guard Arron Afflalo and prized L.A. point guard Eric Bledsoe in conjunction with Thursday's NBA draft, according to sources close to the process.

Sources told ESPN.com on Tuesday that a trade with those two players as the principals could happen as soon as this week and potentially could be expanded to include Magic forward Andrew Nicholson and a future first-round pick as compensation for the highly coveted Bledsoe.

But the long-awaited arrival of Doc Rivers as the Clippers' new coach and senior vice president of basketball operations could push any Bledsoe trade into July -- or maybe even longer -- because Rivers is a well-known Bledsoe fan who has indicated he'd like to keep Bledsoe around if possible.

The greater likelihood remains, however, that keeping Bledsoe around as Chris Paul's very capable backup is a luxury the Clippers won't be able to afford as they continue to try to construct a roster with title-contending staying power. It's been a working assumption in league circles the Clippers would try to trade Bledsoe before next season as soon as they were certain that Paul would re-sign this summer after becoming a free agent on July 1.

ESPN.com reported Sunday that the Clippers believe now that the hiring of Rivers has clinched Paul's signature on a new five-year max contract at the earliest permissable date, July 12. And they've been operating for months under the premise that they'd have to entertain trade offers for Bledsoe regardless or risk losing him for nothing as a restricted free agent in summer 2014. Paul, himself, has been vocal about the fact that, in his view, Bledsoe deserves to be the starter elsewhere.

The 23-year-old has been the focus of trade talks for some time, seemingly since the Clippers fought so hard to keep him out of the trade to bring Paul to L.A. Sources say Orlando is only one of a half-dozen teams pursuing Bledsoe after Boston was rebuffed in its attempts to acquire Bledsoe as an offshoot of the Rivers' negotiations.

Afflalo -- one of the centerpieces of Orlando's haul from the Dwight Howard trade last summer – would give the Clippers more outside shooting and some of the sticky perimeter defense that they've lacked in recent seasons.

Clippers veteran forward Caron Butler likely would be included in the deal to make the salary-cap math work, but sources say the teams are discussing a variety of options. And Rivers, just handed a large say in personnel matters by the Clippers, has to weigh in.

Bledsoe is eligible to sign a contract extension this summer with the Clippers or any team that acquires him between mid-July and Halloween that would prevent him from reaching restricted free agency in 2014. The Clippers previously have resisted virtually all trade interest in Bledsoe to guard against the prospect of Paul leaving the organization via free agency, but the triumphant ending to L.A.'s drawn-out pursuit of Rivers has alleviated those doubts.

Eric Bledsoe Trade For DeMar DeRozan?

Eric Bledsoe Trade For DeMar DeRozan?

By Marc Stein | ESPN.com

The Toronto Raptors have joined the Orlando Magic at the head of the list of known suitors for Los Angeles Clippers guard Eric Bledsoe, according to sources close to the process.

Sources told ESPN.com the talks between the Raptors and Clippers are still in the exploratory stage, but the Raptors' interest in L.A.'s prized young point guard is said to be significant.

The Raptors have been openly shopping forward Andrea Bargnani for months and would try, sources say, to include Bargnani in any deal for Bledsoe, which wouldn't necessarily dissuade the Clippers, given their longstanding need for a big man who can stretch the floor. But sources added that Toronto guard DeMar DeRozan is the Raptor most likely to tempt the Clippers, which falls in line with L.A.'s interest in Arron Afflalo in their Bledsoe talks with Orlando.

Some rival executives believe the Raptors are prepared to part with DeRozan -- recipient of a $40 million contract extension last October -- in the wake of Rudy Gay's arrival and the front-office change that ushered out Bryan Colangelo (who authorized DeRozan's new deal) and ushered in Masai Ujiri.

Magic general manager Rob Hennigan acknowledged to local reporters after Thursday night's draft that Orlando "may revisit" trying to trade for Bledsoe. The Detroit Pistons, sources said, have also expressed serious interest in Bledsoe, who is known to be seeking an extension with any new team before the Halloween deadline for his draft class if dealt this offseason.

The Magic and Clippers have been discussing the possibility of a trade with Afflalo and Bledsoe as the principles for the better part of June. But those talks began before the Clippers' drawn-out hiring of Doc Rivers as their new coach and senior vice president of basketball operations.

Rivers' arrival clearly hasn't stopped teams from calling for Bledsoe, but Rivers is a well-known fan of the 23-year-old and has indicated he'd like to keep Bledsoe around if possible.

Yet the greater likelihood remains that keeping Bledsoe around as Chris Paul's very capable backup is a luxury the Clippers won't be able to afford as they continue to try to construct a roster with title-contending staying power. Clippers veteran forward Caron Butler likely would have to be included in any Bledsoe deal to make the salary-cap math work, but sources say the teams have discussed a variety of options.

It's been a working assumption in league circles the Clippers would try to trade Bledsoe before next season as soon as they were certain that Paul would re-sign this summer after becoming a free agent Monday.

ESPN.com reported this week the Clippers are operating under the assumption that the hiring of Rivers essentially has clinched Paul's signature on a new five-year max contract at the earliest permissible date: July 10. Rival teams that thought they would at least get a face-to-face chance to recruit Paul in free agency have likewise abandoned such hopes.

The Clippers also have been operating for months under the premise that they'd be forced to entertain trade offers for Bledsoe or risk losing him for nothing as a restricted free agent in the summer of 2014. Paul himself has been vocal about the fact that, in his view, Bledsoe deserves to be the starter elsewhere.

Bledsoe has been the focus of trade talks for some time, seemingly since the Clippers fought so hard to keep him out of the trade to bring Paul to L.A. Sources say Orlando is only one of a half-dozen teams pursuing Bledsoe after Boston was rebuffed in its attempts to acquire him as an offshoot of the Rivers' negotiations.

Demar is a pretty underwhelming player. He has stretches where you think he can be a nice player, but he's too inconsistant, doesn't have an aspect of the game that he's great at, and he's an embarrassingly poor 3 point shooter. Take a look at his advanced metrics, he has yet to finish a season with a PER above the season average, and his TS% is poor. He'd be another extremely athletic low IQ guy, a team full of low IQ athletic freaks. Bledsoe was a really nice sparkplug off the bench for the Clippers, and i'm even sure if this trade makes them better, let alone being a game changing player that elevates the Clippers to championship contenders.

The Clippers need less flash, and more blue collar players. The Clippers need to make that Afflalo trade happen. Afflalo is a savvy vet, a competent offensive player, a great defensive player, and a knockdown 3 point shooter. He's the type of guy that can really bring stability and maturity to a team.

I don't know why Toronto would want Eric Bledsoe when they have Kyle Lowry

Clips trying to win now, and Redick / Mayo are both exactly what they need.
I know their frontcourt is still suspect in the playoffs, but now with Rivers at the helm I imagine they'll be a lot better.
