Gilbert Arenas Thread (p.29 Arenas at All-Star Break?)

As presently constituted, the team definitely improved with at the deadline by acquiring a penetrating PG and a backup center, but our 3pt deficiencies suddenly become even more glaring. I sincerely hope Arenas or another shooter is on the horizon since we still have empty roster space and there is no way that we are allowing Morris or Eyenga to crack the lineup anyway.

Here's what I said in the "15th Roster Spot" thread:

I think people are too in love with Arenas's name. Last we saw him he was D-U-N. Maybe he's feeling better physically these days, but I'd rather give Goudelock those minutes personally. The guy might hit the rookie wall soon, but for now I like what he brings in those 8-10 minutes per game.
Every time you want to unload on CL about how terrible our Ownership/Front Office is, I want you to step back, take a deep breath and read THIS.

As the third guard and off the bench spark shooter, I don't mind Arenas. He wouldn't be starting and as a jasonterry spark he's perfect

My interest really stems from the reports that he was in shape and explosive when he did his workout for the Lakers. Admittedly, maybe it's because of Phil, but I dont put too much faith in inexperienced players come playoff time. Arenas may not have much playoff success in his career so far, but Id probably trust him more than Glock (assuming he's healthy and had some time in our system, ofcourse).

Glock's played well enough that I wouldn't mind seeing him out there though, but Id still like to see Gil get a shot if indeed he's in shape.

Before we roll the dice on Arenas I'd like to wait about a week or so and see if any notable players get bought out.

The Memphis Grizzlies are on the verge of signing Gilbert Arenas, sources confirm. Arenas will sign one-year deal worth the veteran minimum.

^ Why the heck did we just not get this guy when we had the chance? He would have been great off the bench.

Just imagine...Sessions, Beasley and Arenas....and you didn't give up anything of value.

We don't have Beasley

I think he will easily avg. 10pts a game. Something our bench could use, BADLY :bang:

The amount of backup PF, PF/C we have, I think that's our weaker spot even though we have a lot of those players.

McRoberts? Murphy? Hill? Those aren't guys who can really produce much with any consistency. We need a guy off the bench like a Carl Landry or a Brandon Bass type player. Strong, solid base player who rebounds and can hit the mid range with consistency. Or a scoring type of PF, like Beasley who has offensive skills, active and athletic.

He may very well average 10 ppg, but I'm not sure it will be very efficient.... poor efficiency is something our bench has plenty of right now..... not sure we need anymore...

Why do people act like Arenas is do DONE? he played bad with the magic, but before he got traded he put up decent numbers. Enough to play an 8th man role on this laker bench. Obviously he's not what he was..But he can provide a little offense off the bench.

People act like Arenas is done because last time we all saw him play he looked done.

That, along with his chronic knee issues and that whole "gun confrontation with a teammate in the locker room" thing. Not difficult to understand why management passed. We'll see if they will bring in someone else.

the first team after us to look at him went ahead and signed him... I hope that's not brass looking to far into his past 3 years and not enough at what he could do for this team

Done in comparison to what did in his prime? maybe......

but when he started last year for Orlando he averaged 17ppg. That was in a system that he just didn't fit in either. This offense is actually perfect for him and I'd think he would have been capable of giving us 10-12 a game. Given how weak our bench scoring is, a consistent 12 per game would be a godsend

Not quite. Heat looked at him too. Let's not forget this is the same Memphis Grizzlies team that signed Allen Iverson.

Exactly. I think the people who say its a bad idea are comparing him to what he was. All this team needs is a spark off the bench. He can provide that. It was clear he didn't fit the system very well in Orlando. Many players struggle when traded mid season. Especially offensive players. He's obviously not the old Arenas. But I'm pretty sure the guy could score 10-12pts a game. He's not gonna play much in Memphis, so people are going to say "see, he's done". He would thrive on this team

I think the reason the lakers didn't sign him is b/c old arenas doesn't fit with kobe...arenas is someone who would jack up a 3 with 22 sec left in the shotclock. If he gets signed for vet min I would have loved him off bench to play some backup PG and backup SG.

Kinda disappointed about this. I still think the Lakers' need a spark plug off the bench to score the ball. Not only would Arenas fit that bill, but he also would have given us another capable ball handler in case Sessions or Blake had an injury. Definitely not trying to go back to the Darius Morris experiment anytime soon. Goudelock is promising, but still not someone we should be dependent on as a rookie.

Damn this guy came off a 111 million dollar contract. From there he went down hill. Enjoyed this guys ability and Hibachi routine. Shame.
