Allen Iverson -- once considered the best player in the NBA -- is a terrible parent ... a horrible, irresponsible, pathetic excuse for a parent ... this according to an Atlanta family court judge.

Iverson just officially became a single man -- after the ATL judge signed off on his divorce from Tawanna Iverson ... the mother of his five children.

But in the final divorce decree, the judge UNLOADS on A.I. ... saying:

"[Iverson] does not know how to manage the children; has little interest in learning to manage the children and has actually, at times, been a hindrance to their spiritual and emotional growth and development.

For example, he has refused to attend to an obvious and serious alcohol problem, which has caused him to do inappropriate things in the presence of the children while impaired.

He has left the children alone without supervision. He has left his young daughters in a hotel room with men who are unknown to the mother."

The judge has awarded Tawanna legal and physical custody of the kids. Allen has some visitation rights ... but ONLY if he abides by certain conditions.

Among them ... Allen must NOT drink a drop of alcohol for the next 18 months. And there's more ... until all of his kids become adults [18+], he can't consume alcohol within 24 hours of the times he has the kids.

He's also been ordered to see a shrink and attend AA meetings for a year.

We reached out to Allen for comment -- but he wasn't there for us when we needed him.

ALLEN IVERSON'S EX
Wants Him Tossed in Jail
Over Unpaid Child Support
EXCLUSIVEAllen Iverson has a date this week with the judge who earlier this year called him a horrible parent ... and seeing as his ex claims he owes $40,000 in child support ... this new hearing will probably go as poorly for Iverson as the last one.

As TMZ first reported, when Iverson's divorce was finalized back in February, the judge in the case tore Iverson's parenting skills a new one ... saying, "He does not know how to manage the children" and he "has been a hindrance to their spiritual and emotional growth and development."

Now TMZ has learned Iverson's ex, Tawanna, has filed docs with the court saying that Iverson has failed to honor the child support agreement that was handed down back in January. The order stated that Iverson was to pay $8,000/month in support for their 5 kids ... but Tawanna claims Iverson has missed every payment he was supposed to make.

The two are set to be in court this week, where Tawanna wants the judge to order Iverson to fork over the $40,000 he owes in support and even suggest the judge lock Iverson up for his actions.

Should be a fun day in court.

He's unemployed now, and he'll never make huge money again. The courts need to understand this and reduce it down to a reasonable amount.

Guess I'm alone here, but I think she should get more. He made about $200 million in his career (mainly his shoe contract). Those are his kids too and he's not fit to raise them. If you got divorced and had 5 kids how much do u think you'd have to pay. Now compare it to his amount. Now compare what you make compared to his $200 mil.

He got off easy.

$8,000 a month is not a lot of money considering the amount of money A.I. made over his career and considering the number of kids he had with his ex-wife. I'm with John and Kenzo... dude got off easy.

Child support is about supporting the kids ...... Alimony is about "lifestyle" support. Two different things.

8K for 5 kids it's alot but it's not that crazy either...that's basically 1600 a kid. If that's the only thing she is getting from him in the divorce then iverson made out like a bandit...(now I have zero idea if she got alimony property, cars etc.).

ALLEN IVERSON
Ex-Wife Claims
HE STOLE OUR KIDS
EXCLUSIVE
Former NBA star Allen Iverson has abducted his own children ... so says his ex-wife, and now she's begging the court to force Allen to give them back.

Tawanna Iverson just filed legal docs, claiming Allen recently asked for permission to take their five kids on a short vacation to Charlotte, NC from May 22nd-May 26th (and Tawanna agreed) but when May 26th rolled around, the children hadn't been returned.

The kids range in age from 3 to 16 years old.

In the docs, Tawanna says she tried to set up an exchange on June 4th at a neutral location -- a nearby Target store -- but A.I. never showed up.

Tawanna -- who has sole legal and primary physical custody of their children -- now believes Allen never took their kids to Charlotte at all ... and is currently keeping them at a Sheraton hotel in Georgia.

Tawanna claims she's especially concerned because Allen's an alcoholic who drinks around their kids.

She now wants the court to force him to return the kids ... and punish him as well, even suggesting the judge lock him up in jail.

It's not the first time she's tried to get Iverson locked up ... she had previously begged the court to send him to the pokey for allegedly not paying more than $40,000 in child support.

Allen has filed legal docs in which he denies all of his ex-wife's allegations
.

Child support isn't always based on previous income. Knowing what I know about AI, that 200 mil is loooong gone. Cant base that payment on what you don't have. Judging by the amount he is paying, its a safe bet to assume he doesn't have anywhere near 200mil.

Report: Allen Iverson Has 72 Hours to Pay $71k in Child Support or Go to Jail

Probably not a good idea to tell a judge you have no plans on paying child support when you just received a $450k check. But, that is what Allen Iverson did and as you can imagine the Judge wasn’t very happy.

Here is how it all went down in court.

Iverson admitted that he told Tawanna that he had no intention of paying her child support despite the fact that he had just received $462,460.24 and thus had the ability to pay.
With those words from his mouth, Judge Lane held him in Contempt of Court and ordered him to pay a total $71,000.00 within 72 hours otherwise she directed the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office to place him under arrest and keep him in jail until the payment is made.
Judge Lane also stated in her written order the following:
The father, rather unapologetically, testified that he had consumed alcohol “maybe twenty” times recently, including during his parenting time; that he had not taken any therapy sessions; that he had not taken any therapy sessions; that he had not attended any AA meetings; and that he did not intend to attend any.
Judge Lane gave the former NBA star 72 hours to provide proof that he has registered with a licensed entity that has the ability to screen for drug and alcohol usage otherwise she ordered Fulton County Sheriff to place him under arrest and hold him in jail for five days.
The good news is A.I. can now buy himself a cheeseburger, but he just needs to pay, so he doesn’t end up in jail. He doesn’t seem to be taking the proceedings very seriously. That didn’t work out too well for Chad Johnson, so A.I. you have been warned don’t butt slap your attorney if you come out of this ok.

EXCLUSIVE
Wanna get Allen Iverson to pay his child support bill? Threaten jail ... because the ex-NBA star finally coughed up the $40,000 he owed his ex wife ... narrowly escaping time in the slammer.

TMZ broke the story ... Iverson's ex, Tawanna, has been trying to collect child support from the b-baller since their divorce was finalized in February, but no cigar. Then, last month she asked a judge to throw him in jail, if he continued to dodge the bill: $8,000 / month for the last 5 months.

In new court docs -- filed last month in Fulton County, GA -- Iverson said he never paid the money because he was led to believe he and Tawanna would reconcile.

Taking a hard stance a judge ordered Iverson pony up the cash within 72 hours ... or be arrested.

The threat apparently worked, Iverson's lawyer tells TMZ ... "Allen has complied with the order and met every term for which he was required."

Also ... he's not in jail.
