Jarrett Jack & Agent Reassure Warriors He Wants To Re-Sign

OAKLAND, Calif. – He arrived in a July trade and embraced the adventure of a new city and the new situation that would have been difficult for many players to accept. Jarrett Jack actually liked the unknown.

The season-long discovery process led to a decision. He wants to re-sign with the Warriors in the summer, even with the clear understanding he might be giving up the chance to start somewhere else for the certainty of a backup role to Stephen Curry at point guard in Golden State.

Jack is so sure of it, he told NBA.com, that he has informed management and directed his agents to re-enforce the message that he is hoping to stay once he becomes a free agent in July.

“That’s one of the reasons why I’m really trying to enjoy the moment right now,” he said Saturday with the Warriors holding a 2-1 lead over the favored Nuggets in the best-of-seven first round that continues Sunday night at Oracle Arena. “I’m appreciating everything that’s going on. In the summer, hopefully that process is a little bit further than we all want it to be. There are a lot of variables that go into making that decision. Hopefully, I can stay right here. I told my agent. I’m sure he spoke to the powers that be that I have desires to stay right here and help this franchise grow to the best of its ability.

“I think it’s just a perfect marriage. My teammates, the camaraderie we have, I like my role. I like what I’m able to bring to this team. Could I go somewhere and it would be bigger, but we might not be playing for as much? I try to make it a perfect marriage. The economics, that’s going to take precedent at times, but you also want to be happy. That’s the most fulfilling thing I have playing on this team.”

The eight-year veteran has been locked into a reserve role many times in a career that previously included stops in Portland, Indiana, Toronto and New Orleans, but never like this. He started only four times in the regular season, tied with his 2005-06 rookie campaign as a Trail Blazer for the fewest in his career. Still, the 29.7 minutes per game with a constant presence in the fourth quarter meant a major role.

Free agency on July 1 could be Jack’s chance to find a place where the ball is in his hands all the time, reminiscent of the days when he started at least half the games with the Raptors, Pacers and Trail Blazers. Plus, he is building the resume just in time for the offseason, with a very good showing the first three games of the playoffs as the Warriors went to a three-guard starting lineup of Klay Thompson, Curry and Jack when power forward David Lee suffered a hip injury in the opener.

“I’ve been in that capacity before,” Jack said. “It doesn’t make or break or define the player that I am. Could I go somewhere else and [start]? Yeah. But I like who we have here. I like the role that I’m in and am comfortable in. If it’s able to work out, I would love to be back here.”

whoops! well, i suppose it would only be for one year, but that's still a bit of a bill for a 6 seed.

Jarrett Jack Shut Down Extension Talks

Jarrett Jack Shut Down Extension Talks, Wants To Experience Free Agency

According to multiple team sources, the Warriors initiated extension talks with guard Jarrett Jack back in January. But Jack shut down such talks before they got rolling, looking to focus on the season and wanting to experience free agency.

Jack, who drew interest from multiple teams during the trade deadline, is in the last year of his contract paying him $5 million this season. He is expected to be a fairly well sought after this offseason, especially with the postseason he’s having, as multiple teams are looking for a point guard. Multiple teams are looking for point guards — including Utah, Charlotte, Toronto and possibly Milwaukee (since Brandon Jennings is a restricted free agent). Plus, Jack has proven to be a difference-maker off the bench, which has intrigued multiple teams that already have a point guard, such as the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs.

Jack has been an integral part of the Warriors’ success this season, averaging 12.9 points and 5.6 assists off the bench in 29.7 minutes off the bench. He is a respected voice in the locker room and has proven a capable option when starter Stephen Curry out of the lineup.

But will Jack turn down a lucrative offer from another team? Will the Warriors be be able and willing to match or compete?

Money, however, isn’t the only obstacle. Golden State will have to determine if it wants to commit so many minutes to Jack. As it stands now, Jack is playing minutes in the fourth quarter at the expense of rookie forward Harrison Barnes. A bigger role for Barnes would probably mean a smaller roll for Jack (since sitting Curry or second-year guard Klay Thompson is not an option).

Warriors general manager Bob Myers declined to comment until after the season.

“I believe everything will work out,” Jack said in a previous interview. “I want to be here and if they want me here, it will work out.”

It's a pipe dream, but he would be the perfect player for us to get:

Is a PG, combo guard, can create his own shot, young, decently athletic, doesn't get hurt very often and one less Lakers killer in the league .

i actually think jack has looked pretty shaky at times in the playoffs. enough that if i'm a team thinking about offering him starter's money/role, i'm reconsidering a bit.

Yeah he doesn't take good decisions down the stretch on both sides off the ball ... he's not an organizer , he's a scorer ... one of the best offensive sparks coming off the bench in the league though ... no doubt about it

oh yeah, if he's your backup, you're golden. but my guess is that any team that pays him is wanting a starter. otherwise, he'll just stay in gs, right?

that would be a great pickup...Jack's raising his value in their run and we might be able to snag Rush during their efforts to sign Jack

I thought he'd be perfect for the Lakers but I see why Warriors fans don't like him. I forgot that our guards make everybody look like All Stars.

he hit a big time jumper over parker in crunch time last night. but in general, I agree with d.b. don't get caught up in how great players (especially small scoring guards) look against the lakers.

I don't think jack's a good starting pg.

Are the Nuggets trying to lead the league in PGs on their roster?
