Knicks add Sheed to the roster

AL IANNAZZONE of Newsday wrote: The Knicks are considering signing former All-Star big man Rasheed Wallace, league sources said.

Wallace, 38, hasn't played in the NBA since the 2009-10 season. But multiple sources said Wallace worked out at the Knicks' practice facility last week and is considering a return to the NBA. He has a good relationship with Knicks coach Mike Woodson, who was an assistant with Detroit when Wallace helped the Pistons win the 2004 NBA championship.

ESPN.com first reported Wallace had worked out for the Knicks.

The Knicks are looking for a defensive-minded backup power forward/center. Wallace can be volatile, but he would seem to be a low-risk, high-reward option for the veteran team, which is looking to advance past the first round of the playoffs for the first time since the 1999-2000 season.

Believing they have a chance to win now, the Knicks already added 30-something players Jason Kidd, Marcus Camby, Kurt Thomas and Pablo Prigioni this offseason.

The 6-10 Wallace has averaged 14.6 points over 15 seasons and was one of the better low-post defenders during his career. The four-time All-Star played in 177 postseason games, and appeared in three NBA Finals.

Rasheed Wallace worked out with #Knicks last week. Source: Not in very good shape. Still some intrigue. He & Woody were in Detroit together.

Not in very good shape. :man10:

He was hardly ever in "good shape" when he played. He pushed his back through one of the most brutal Finals I can remember and he looked like he died on that court. Don't come back, idiot. Go out to pasture where you belong.

Rasheed Wallace?

Yup, he gets to decide his own fate according to Marc Berman of the New York Post (and it was confirmed by Sheed’s agent).

The Knicks are willing to take a gamble on 6-foot-11 power forward Rasheed Wallace, who retired two seasons ago after finishing a disappointing one-year stint as a Celtic.

But Wallace, who worked out with Knicks players Saturday at their training facility, still has not decided whether he is willing to dedicate himself to getting himself back in NBA shape at age 38. Clearly, he’s nowhere close now.

When do I get to decide what job I want to take? Because I want to be Phil Keoghan.

I remember talking to Wallace during the finals when he was retiring after the 2010 season (he and the Celtics went to Game 7 with the Lakers), and he still loved the games and being with his teammates, but he was weary of the grind of a long NBA season — the travel, the constant conditioning, the practices and training camps. He’d done it for years, he didn’t have the passion to do it anymore. As a guy who didn’t love the conditioning when he was playing, it’s not a surprise he fell out of NBA shape after he left the league.

After being away for a couple years, does he have that passion back? Ask him. The Knicks have. The ball is in his court, he can play or he can put it down and walk away.

Rasheed Wallace Will Sign With The Knicks On Monday

Rasheed Wallace will officially become a Knick on Monday.

Wallace has told the Knicks he has elected to come out of retirement and join their training camp, according to an NBA source.

The 6-foot-11 Wallace, who worked out with the Knicks over the weekend, retired two years ago after a disappointing season with the Celtics. The Knicks are expected to announce the signing Monday at Media Day. The first practices begin Tuesday.

The tempestuous Wallace, 38, will become the fifth Knick over the age of 35, joining Jason Kidd, Marcus Camby, Kurt Thomas and Pablo Prigioni.

Though contracts haven’t been signed, there are indications Wallace has participated in voluntary workouts in Westchester across the past few days. Pending results of a physical he took Wednesday, Wallace will become Amar’e Stoudemire’s backup at power forward.

Stoudemire has been impressed with Wallace’s lights-out shooting from the 3-point line.

“I don’t know if he signed yet but he has looked good from the time he has been with us,’’ Stoudemire told The Post yesterday during his visit to Rikers Island to speak with adolescent prisoners.

Earlier this week, Tyson Chandler told The Post Wallace looked good in workouts and would be a big help.

Wallace’s agent, Bill Strickland, told The Post yesterday he has not begun contract negotiations with the Knicks and wouldn’t confirm a decision has been made. Not much negotiation needs to be done, as Wallace would stand to make the veteran’s minimum of $1.7 million.

Strickland would only say if Wallace comes out of retirement, it would only be with the Knicks because of his relationship with coach Mike Woodson, the Pistons assistant under Larry Brown when Detroit won the 2004 title.

The Knicks look at the move as no-risk, high-reward. If it doesn’t pan out and even if Wallace decides to retire again, the team still has Thomas as a backup power forward. Wallace is a stout help defender and rebounder.

Woodson pushed for the move, which could also signal the Knicks being concerned about the durability of Stoudemire, who has broken down in both of his playoff appearances with the Knicks because of a chronic back issue.

There’s a notion Wallace retired after the 2009-10 season because he no longer had the dedication to get in NBA shape and finished the Celtics year in poor condition. However, his mother — now in good health — was ill at the time of Wallace’s retirement, and that could have been a factor in his decision.

How could the writer call this no-risk high reward? Look at Sheed's condition in 2010, then tack on two years of sitting at home, probably doing very little to stay in shape.

This isn't no-risk high reward, its a complete waste of time.

Was Sheed EVER in shape? He always looked a little soft and doughy to me, even when he was young. Man it's gonna be weird seeing the old dude back after being out 2 seasons .

Big men who can defend the post and shoot the ball are a rarity. No matter what age they are. And for Vet Min, I can't blame them for signing him up. I am assuming of course that they aren't paying him more than vet min, but you never know with the Knicks.

Not sure Sheed will be able to provide anything...out of shape, attitude...

he doesn't even look like he takes a shower once a month or so.

It'll be interesting to see him back in the league again, but I was surprised to hear he's not really in shape. I would have thought he'd be preparing this past off season (perhaps longer).
