In his weekly interview with WEEI's The Big Show, Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge discussed the surprising start to Greg Stiemsma's career, the maturation process of Rajon Rondo and a possible debut date for Mickael Pietrus.

Stiemsma, a 26-year-old former Defensive Player of the Year in the D-League for Sioux Falls Skyforce, has emerged as a legitimate NBA center early in his career. Ainge was asked about Stiemsma's performance.

"He's played very well from the first day of training camp," said Ainge of Stiemsma, who is averaging 4.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.6 blocks in his first five NBA games. "He's been a positive influence on our team, our coaches have really liked him, he earned their respect right away. He's been good."

Ainge was asked if he was ever concerned that Rondo would be at all affected by the rumors that had the point guard potentially being swapped for Chris Paul.

"I sat down with Rondo when he got back into town, when the lockout ended, and I just told him the truth of what was going on. And that was it," Ainge said. "I've had conversations since, told him exactly what was happening. … I was not trying to trade Rajon Rondo. There's a big difference between trying to acquire a player and trying to trade a player. Rondo knows what I was trying to do, and he knows I wasn't shopping him around and trying to trade him, as has been reported. There's a big difference."

As for Rondo's early-season performance (15.3 points per game, league-best 10.7 assists per game), Ainge credits the point guard's work ethic during the lockout.

"I think that that he was very motivated, we had received reports all summer how hard he was working this offseason," said Ainge. "He showed up in great shape and he came out of the gates playing fantastic basketball for us, and he had a great training camp and he has the right mindset when he goes out on the court."

Ainge also told Glenn Ordway and Michael Holley that Mickael Pietrus (knee surgery) could debut for the Celtics next Wednesday vs. the Mavericks at the Garden.

Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge would not comment publicly on the report that the Celtics are actively shopping Rajon Rondo, who turned in his 16th career triple-double last night in the Celtics' 102-96 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks.

"I do not make comments on trade rumors because it never ends," he told the Globe this afternoon. "Rondo's been our best player."

During a December press conference before training camp, Ainge admitted that he offered Rondo in a potential deal for Chris Paul. But an NBA source said that Rondo is not being dangled out there for any deal but the Celtics will listen to offers if it will improve the team.

Rondo is a three-time all-star and perhaps one of the most versatile point guards in the game.

"Rajon has been spectacular at times this year," Ainge said.

Rival GMs insist Rondo's available. Could they pry Josh away from ATL w/out giving up Pierce or KG? Jeff Green would be good fit in ATL

Mavericks Interested In Rajon Rondo Trade

Adrian Wojnarowski ‏@WojYahooNBA 17m

Mavs would love having Rajon Rondo to chase Dwight Howard, but Boston needs Dallas to take multiple contracts off its books, sources say.

As http://Dallasbasketball.com says, Celts/Mavs talked some Rondo. Celtics like Larkin, but how do Mavs take contracts and keep space for Howard?

Danny Ainge: Celtics Have 'No Intentions Of Moving' Rajon Rondo

BOSTON -- The Boston Celtics plan to continue the summer cleaning of their roster, and president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said he welcomes all calls about his team's talent but stressed again Monday that they do not currently plan to move All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo as part of the rebuilding process.

After the Celtics agreed to a draft-night blockbuster that will send veterans Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry to the Brooklyn Nets later this month when the deal is able to be consummated, some wondered whether Rondo -- the final member of the team's 2008 title squad -- might be the next one sent packing.

Ainge echoed his draft-night sentiments that the Celtics view Rondo as a potential building block as they try to get back to contender status.

"The calls are coming in, the calls have not been going out," Ainge said. "I think that the assumption is that, [given] what we are trying to accomplish, the reports are such that maybe the assumption is that we'll give away any of our players. We have had calls. On Jeff [Green], on Courtney [Lee], on Brandon [Bass], on Rondo, on Jared [Sullinger] and our draft pick, Kelly [Olynyk]. There's been calls for all those guys. And maybe the assumption is we are just changing everybody, but we're not. We're starting to get younger."

Ainge admitted that Boston's main objective this summer is to get its salary structure in order, and the team will continue to explore the trade avenues while seeking to give itself more cap flexibility in future seasons. That is likely to put players such as Bass and Lee in the spotlight because of the money committed to them over multiple seasons (and the same with Gerald Wallace upon his arrival in the Nets deal).

But the Celtics are not seeking additional help at the moment through free agency, which Ainge said "is not a priority for us." Just the opposite, with the Celtics set to bring back a large collection of players from the Nets, Ainge admitted his team actually needs to shed bodies, which started Sunday when the team cut Terrence Williams and his non-guaranteed contract in what Ainge termed "a numbers game."

Added Ainge: "As a matter of fact, we have too many players. We have logjams at power forward, and center and shooting guard. We have a lot of guys, potentially, if things continue as they are. I think that our job is to try to clean that up through the summer."

Asked whether all the incoming talent from Brooklyn might stick on the roster, Ainge noted, "Don't know; I have no idea. We have a lot of things to do this summer to clean our roster up, but I don't know who will be on that roster."

Ainge stressed that the team's current plans include Rondo despite the fact that his name bubbled up this weekend with the Dallas Mavericks reportedly being interested in his services.

"Don't believe everything you read, especially on Twitter," Ainge quipped.

Ainge said that both Rondo and the team remain hopeful that he'll be able to return from ACL surgery for the start of the season, but admitted there isn't certainty in that. He said he was happy with Rondo's rehab and that the point guard is still targeting opening day as his goal.

So would Ainge prefer that rival general managers stop calling about Rondo?

"I always listen to calls and listen to what [their] ideas are, but we have no intentions of moving Rajon," Ainge said.

Apparently there is a rumor floating around that Houston is talking to Boston about Rondo. Dwight's camp is adamantly against that. Unlikely

:man10:

Probably because it'd force the ball out of Dwight's hands even more than it will be already.

What would Houston give up anyway? I'd think the Lakers have a nice offer of Gasol at any point this season if Boston really wants to go that route.

I think Rondo would do a pretty good job at getting the ball to Dwight, but they wouldn't be a great fit. Both are known for high turnovers, bad FT%, and no jumper (bad spacing). They probably also want Lin for the asian market.

Rondo is much like Kobe: he'll hold Dwight accountable. Dwight is going to strong arm Houston to keep out all those types of people that will threaten Howard's good time.

Mavs will talk about trading for Rondo and end up with absolutely nothing, because they're the Mavs.
There are two teams that play in the Staples Center:
the LA Lakers and NBA Clippers.

^^The only mistake you can make with Rondo is not getting him if you truly have the chance..... now Smith and Jennings are different and I agree with you but Rondo is a fairly rare player that elevates his game in the post season..... significantly. He also has the heart to be a leader. Pairing him with Smith and Jennings is not going to work but getting him would be a great move if they can do it.

Carmelo Recruiting Rajon Rondo To Knicks

Rajon Rondo is getting closer to returning from a torn ACL and his future with the Boston Celtics remains uncertain.

Rondo has long been mentioned in trade rumors and is eligible for free agency in 2015.

"Whether he stays in Boston or not who knows," said Rondo's high school coach, Steve Smith of Oak Hill Academy. "I know, talking to Melo (Carmelo Anthony), he's recruiting Rajon to come to New York. Melo thinks he'll come too. You never know about that stuff though. I think either way, Rajon will be fine."

Rajon Rondo Denies Report Of Being Recruited By Carmelo

By Baxter Holmes / Globe Staff/ December 10, 2013

NEW YORK — Rumors surround Rajon Rondo like no other. A fresh batch is born every season, few with merit.

One of the latest eyebrow-raising reports tied the Celtics All-Star point guard to New York Knicks star forward Carmelo Anthony.

Steve Smith, who coached both Anthony and Rondo at Oak Hill Academy in Virginia, told USA Today last week that Anthony was “recruiting” Rondo to come play for the Knicks.

“C’mon man. In my book, that’s tampering,” Anthony told reporters when asked about it.

Rondo also dismissed Smith’s comments.

“People talk, media talk, people make up rumors, people run with them,” Rondo said after the Celtics’ shootaround Tuesday before they played the Brooklyn Nets.

“I haven’t spoken to him. He ain’t contacted me. It’s just rumors.” Full story for BostonGlobe.com subscribers.

Knicks Hope Rajon Rondo Forces Trade

The New York Knicks are interested in acquiring Rajon Rondo from the Boston Celtics.

The Knicks hope that Rondo will eventually try to force a trade to the Knicks in a way that was similar to Carmelo Anthony in 2011, according to sources.

The Celtics have consistently denied wanting to trade Rondo, but he will have just one guaranteed season remaining on his contract after the deadline.

The Knicks fully expect to re-sign Anthony in the offseason and at the very least have enough cap space in 2015 to sign a max player.

"They're one confident bunch," a league executive said this week. "To listen to them, they expect to have Carmelo re-signed and have another star with him in another year. They're so sure about it you'd think they already know what will happen."

Wouldn't doubt that one bit. I've never thought Melo would leave money on the table in NYC. Just not his style. Rondo in NYC is plausible as well.
