Mark Cuban says he'd draft Brittney Griner

Postby Finwë on Thu Apr 04, 2013 10:41 am

Surprised to see that this hasn't been posted. Apparently Mark Cuban was asked about Brittney Griner (I have no idea who she is btw) and this is what he said:
If she is the best on the board, I will take her. I’ve thought about it. I’ve thought about it already. Would I do it? Right now, I’d lean toward yes, just to see if she can do it. You never know unless you give somebody a chance, and it’s not like the likelihood of any late-50s draft pick has a good chance of making it.

This quickly set off a bunch of talk about women in the NBA, people saying women shouldn't play, others saying they should if they have the ability, others being straight up mysoginistic..

From my POV, if someone has the talent required to play, they should be given the chance to play.. I know it's not traditional, but the league runs on talent, and nothing else.. If there's a woman who has skills, doesn't lack the size, and could seriously be a rotation player, then I'd have no problem with her getting a chance.. I don't know if there are many, but if the case came up, then I wouldn't have a problem with that.

What's your take?

EDIT -> relevant to the topic:
Tom Haberstroh ‏@tomhaberstroh 11min
Asked Shane Battier whether we'll ever see a female NBA player. "In my lifetime, yes. No doubt."
"The first time I ever saw my uniform hanging in the locker I put it on right away, and it just felt like I was putting on golden armour. From that day forward, I just called it 'the golden armour', it just felt like there was something mystical and magical about it" - Kobe Bryant.

She is a big *** chick at 6-8 who dominates the women's game. That being said, she is a "Big" in the girls game which would not translate to the mens game. She would be too slow and too light in the butt to bang with the forwards of the NBA. I can see a woman making the NBA but as a guard because they rely on quickness, handles and are use to playing against the trees. A lot of female ballers who grew up playing the PG position usually ball with men in the first place. Thats probably the only ones that would tranlate over to the NBA game at this point.
For what it's worth, the Lakers also clinched the Pacific Division, an achievement Bryant dismissed by saying "We don't hang divisions." No, only the big NBA championship banners are considered wall-worthy for the Lakers.

alright, i'll be that guy: no freaking way could tourasi do what boykins did in the nba. not a chance. do you know what the speed and strength differential is there?

i have a buddy who played pick up ball with sheryl swoopes and some of the dudes on texas tech's college team. he said swoopes was better than him, but not better than those guys. at the time, she was known as one of the best women's players ever, i believe.

Cuban looking for pub yet again.

I'm fine with allowing women into the NBA as long as they allow men in the WNBA.

Call me whatever you want to call me, but there is a reason why the best woman athlete has never been able to compete with the best male athlete in any sport.

I think that if Cuban believes it he should draft her. And I'd wish her well in the league.

Could you imagine her trying to guard Kobe, or Dwight, or......Metta :freak2:
I should get an assist for that. It's an intentional pass to oneself, so it's an assist. That way people can't say all I do is shoot.

I don't watch women's college b-ball, so I have no idea.

Think about how many people look ridiculous guarding Kobe and Dwight though.

She lacks all of the physical tools to play in the NBA. All of them.

She lacks all of the basketball skills to play against the best High School boys teams, let alone college men.

If she's drafted and she actually tries out for the team, it'll be as a sad joke. Nothing more.

Assuming there was a woman qualified to play in the NBA my biggest concern would be bias with the officiating. Would the refs go easy on the women and call more fouls in their favor? No matter how tall and strong any woman is they won't be able to take the abuse that players normally take down low or driving to the basket, so would the refs let them off the hook and give them more favorable treatment by calling more touch fouls and fouls on light contact that normally wouldn't be called for men?

No woman stands a chance against a professional male athlete, PERIOD. The most dominant players on WTA tour (Serena and Venus) used to get spanked (bageled) training with male players with ATP ranking around 300-400 :man9:

We won't see a woman in the NBA for a very long time. The athleticism between men and woman is just massive. I play a lot of pickup basketball at the gym. This is a gym that a lot of people from all over come to play. From time to time we get woman from university teams, and high school varsity girls as well. Now I don't have a huge basketball back ground, but I was one of the best sprinters in the area, i'm pretty short too(5'6). Almost every girl i've played against has struggled against me- a guy with good athleticism, but no height, and a below average skill set. Even the more skilled girls have a lot of troubled against the boys. They might have decent handles, but they have no first step to speak of, and if they do get into the lame they get their shot blocked, or turn it over. I have seen some girls get hot spotting up from outside though.

Someone mentioned that a woman playing at the point guard position would be the most likely. Now think of it this way, Darren Collison is probably faster than any woman in history, and he's almost completely worthless in the NBA. Put Darren Collison in the WNBA and he averages 40 points a game.

I don't disagree with the common thought here. I haven't seen any woman who could really be effective in the NBA. If there was one however, I wouldn't mind her playing at all

This.

The closest I've seen to a woman player able to compete with the men of her era was Nancy Lieberman in the early 80s. I saw her on a weekend at Pauley compete with Bruin players in pick-up games and she held her own. I think Nancy was actually drafted by a men's United States Basketball League, whatever the hell that was. She was just extremely skilled -- over the top, really, and that allowed her to compete with bigger, faster, stronger male players. But aside from her, I haven't seen a WNBA player that could get many minutes on a decent boys high school team.

oh, ok. we're in agreement. :man12:

i don't see why people need to feel bad when making statements of fact, particularly about something as trivial as pro sports. nobody's trying to justify the pay gap in white collar jobs here, just saying that women aren't nearly as good at basketball as men.
