Here are some of today's stories:

Sportsline name Shaq #1 center in the league, big surprise huh
sportsline: Shaq is in a class by himself when it comes to dominating the game on both ends of the floor as a center, but he has backslid among the all-time greats the past couple of seasons with a lack of conditioning and general energy. This is a big year for him in that regard.

Kemp is trying to get on with the Nuggets. He is trying to find a team before training camp starts. The Nuggets still have some money, but probably wouldn't offer him any more than the minimum

Spurs sign another no namer-Sean Marks. He is the only New Zealander in the NBA.

Notes from around the NBA
By RONALD TILLERY
September 15, 2003

Milwaukee Buck turned Seattle SuperSonic turned Boston Celtic forward Vin Baker finally put on the uniform that matters most.

Designed by Rock bottom.

His jersey?

It's a popular style: Reluctant acknowledgement.

"I am an alcoholic," Baker admitted last week in a wide-ranging interview with the Boston Globe.

Those words are enough to believe Baker - maligned as a waste of space in the NBA - will resume a productive basketball career.

I followed Baker for three seasons in Seattle. At least two years were filled with speculation about Baker's off-court lifestyle - some of which was perpetrated by then-coach Paul Westphal.

Bottom line: Baker's game had been rendered worthless in large part because of his alleged carousing.

The prevailing theory was that Baker was a suburban kid trying to run with the city boys, and couldn't hang. Now we know it was the sad truth. During his Seattle days, Baker tried desperately to be accepted by Oakland-native Gary Payton, who is a physical freak.

That's a very sad story, he had great potential. I hope he recovers fully and can get on with his life again.

Slava laughed at the suggestion his skills might be affected by the down time. "Are you kidding?" he said. "Basketball is like ball. It's all a circle."

Although swolswol put those words in HARSH terms, he is 100% correct. Pro Athletes make a lot of money, they may not realize it, but some of our parents make about 50-80 grand a year, and other parents make 250 grand a year and we think that is rich? Some players in the NBA are earning about 800,000 A YEAR...that is a [Swearing is not permitted at Clublakers. You must edit this post prior to submitting.] load of money, even if u jus made that money for one year, thats a boat load...now we're lookin at guys like Vin Baker, who makes a good 70-90 million over a couple of years(i believe its bout 13 mil a year for him?), and he is sayin he is depressed? WTF?

I hope he avg ATLEAST double digits next year cuz hes a sorry excuse of a washed up veteran...

Well remember... money doesn't buy happiness... you could be incredibly damn rich and feel like sh*t.
