NBA Approves Small Changes

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- The NBA Board of Governors approved a new look for uniforms and a couple of changes in the use of video replay.

Commissioner David Stern met with the media Thursday after the Board of Governors held their annual summer meeting.

He said the league is looking to add possibly $100 million in revenue by permitting small advertising patches on uniforms starting in the 2013-14 season.

''The view is, that the teams would need a significant time; one, to sell the patch; and number two, for Adidas to manufacture the uniforms, because the patch that would be on the players' uniforms would also appear on the jerseys at retail,'' said Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver, who is handling the uniform change.

Silver said there are revenue projections from European soccer teams that the NBA could use.

The competition committee altered a few rule changes with respect to the use of video replay, primarily in the final 2 minutes or overtime of games.

At any point in the game, officials can now check video replay on all flagrant fouls.

''So the call is flagrant foul and then you go the tape, and you decide whether it's a 1 or a 2, or in some rare instance, maybe even a common foul,'' Stern said.

Officials can now use video replay in the final two minutes or overtime to decide whether a defender was in or out of the restricted area around the basket on charge and blocking fouls. Replay can also be used for goaltending calls in the late stages games as well.

In September, the competition committee will look at flopping and fouls away from the ball.

Stern said that under the Collective Bargaining Agreement and the implementation of revenue sharing that profitable numbers are ''optimistic.''

He said the proposed sale of the Memphis Grizzlies is proceeding on pace and the league hopes to approve it in the next couple of months. The league approved the sale of the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan's ownership interest in the Toronto Raptors to Bell Canada and Rogers Communications.

Stern said there are more positives with the league, including the successful summer league held in Las Vegas.

''We had a happy group of owners,'' Stern said. ''Our ratings are up 28 percent over the last decade, while television ratings are down around 30 percent the last decade. We are going to have our best year ever, both in gate and sponsorship this coming year.''

I wonder how long it will be until teams are no longer named for the cities they play in and instead bear the names of the corporation who owns or pays for naming rights. Very unfortunate that retail versions will also contain the same advertisements.

I am a fan of replay to ensure that the right calls get made but concerned with even more stoppage of play. The game has slowed down a lot from the pace it had 10-15 years ago. It would be too much to hope for them to kill two birds with one stone and air commercials during the video reviews.

So I guee I'll grab another Kobe jersey without an ad on the jersey pretty soon :man10: - in soccer I'm used to this. BUt the NBA? That's just weird but imagine all the money, especially the Lakers could receive. I guess we would have some sort of a nice sponsor while teams like the Cats would be happy to even get one :man10: . Or are the planning one sponsor for every NBA team?

I get that the ads kinda ruin the authentic feel of jerseys, but let's get real, the NBA is a business, teams are franchises, the owners are gonna do everything they can to maximize their profits.
I don't have a problem with that kind of thinking, and if it helps us pay the luxury tax and that translates into more willingness to spend on players, then I welcome the concept.

the NBA is 3rd in the world in major professional sports leagues (around $3.8 billion annual revenue) and they want more money with the ads. makes sense.

So... it's going to look like NASCAR out there...... sweet...

I'll make a mental note to avoid at all costs the advertisers that "sponsor" these guys......

Also they seem to kickin' the can down the road on the CP3 rule....... I sure hope to heck they stop the flopping crap..... and soon.

The NBA Board of Governors approved the inclusion of advertisements on game uniforms for the 13-14 season.

Small advertising could generate $100 million in new revenue.

"The view is, that the teams would need a significant time; one, to sell the patch; and number two, for Adidas to manufacture the uniforms, because the patch that would be on the players' uniforms would also appear on the jerseys at retail," said Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver.

Professional soccer teams have long had advertisements on uniforms and the NBA is using their numbers as projections for revenues.

That was quick. But I got the feeling that this will look really ugly. The still need to get the Team names and numbers on the front ... and I hope the Lakers don't change their jersey style.

But I'll grab another jersey in the current style ... :man11:

Well don't think they'll have really big ads. At least I hope so.

Something like this I would be okay with:

In euro-football the jersey ads seem acceptable because the revenue generated from the sponsor is used (presumably) towards the team & acquiring players, staff, and personnel.

But in the NBA, combined with it's salary-cap and revenue sharing, how the hell will this work? ESPECIALLY with revenue sharing. I mean there will be major discrepancy between the Lakers sporting a CANON logo on their jerseys, and the Bobcats inking up Bob's Camera Repair Shop as a sponsor.

If buying a sponsored Lakers jersey means we're pouring more money into pockets of guys like Stern, James Dolan and Dan Gilbert, then forget it! That is would be utter BS. Under those circumstances I'll never buy a jersey with a sponsor on it, and I can see many others sharing the same sentiment.
There are two teams that play in the Staples Center:
the LA Lakers and NBA Clippers.

I think it will be "league wide" sponsorships not team by team or player by player..... Nike or Adidas for example....

It may just be incidental semantics but the article said that teams would need time to sell the patch, not the league.

I read that as well..... as pointed out above... that would be difficult to implement and would screw up everything the small market teams hoped to accomplish in the new CBA.... I was assuming that it would be league sponsors ..... not team ones..

Teams already commit to advertising relationships individually, it wouldn't be difficult to expand that to a patch on a jersey.

The CBA would also still limit spending and lead to revenue sharing if teams overspent.

Then again, the article DOES say the LEAGUE would add revenue. Guess we'll just have to wait and see. Either way I'm against it, although it could lead to some hilarity. What if Nike bought the patches and their logo appeared more prominently than jersey maker Addidas's.
