NBA open to idea of expanding All-Star break to a week

The All-Star weekend is a busy one — and not just for Damian Lillard (who will be in five events during the weekend).

For the players selected to the team it is a whirlwind of media events, community events, practices and, oh yea, a basketball game. Plus a few parties. Then a few more parties. You think it’s a weekend off but it’s more like that vacation your wife schedules out where she wants to see and do everything in Italy/New York/San Francisco/wherever that you are constantly running around and when it’s over you don’t feel like you rested at all.

It’s not much of a rest for the players (there is a reason Tim Duncan didn’t want to be on the team this year, the coaches granted him his wish and didn’t vote him on even though he was deserving).

Some players have brought up the idea of expanding the All-Star break to a week, including players’ union president Chris Paul, and the.

“I definitely think it’s something that should happen,” Paul told NBA.com while attending a pep rally and press conference at a New Orleans grade school, where he was inducted into the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation ambassador program.

Paul said he spoke with Silver about the possibility of a longer All-Star break.

“Obviously All-Star Weekend is all about the fans and showcasing our game to the entire world, but it would be nice to get a little break,” the Clippers guard said. “Not saying the all stars are unhappy or ungrateful for being all stars, but to enjoy your family for a couple days would be nice.”

“I said, ‘We’d be happy to look into it,’ ” Silver said. “The notion is that, in addition to the All-Star Game and the events itself, there would be a break built into the schedule. Maybe we could resume play on Thursday night, later in the week, to insure that the All-Stars got time off as well.”

Silver is more open to discussing new ideas than David Stern was, at least that’s the feeling around the league.

He’s also a negotiator. If he gives the players this what is he going to want in return?

It’s not a bad idea, a little longer breather in the NBA schedule. Just something to watch as the new commissioner and the new union president start to talk about issues of concern to both sides.

Easy peasy..... We could add......

Old timers game..... 24-7 PR about how the players give 130% of their salary to charities complete with documentaries from the "home" city and it's star players building houses and handing out cans of food...... Move the Draft Combine to All Star Weekend..... Have a off hand game..... sack race...... Owner's vs Players game..... NBA Players Rap TV with videos.... A car rally showing the mods needed to accommodate "big guys".... a Groupie Pageant..... NBA Mom's cook off/Pageant...... NBA Mom's vs Groupies game.... NBA Divorce Court.... NBA Police blotter.... Black History with Chris Webber and Charles Barkley..... A lovable goof former player/commentator can interview the President.... NBA "Cribs to Shopping Carts under the Freeway" with Alan Iverson, Antoine Walker and Derrick Coleman.....

Also they need couple of days with the family? Yes family is important but it's not like they are gone from their family for years.

The All Star game intro could easily add 5 minutes and make a full day out of it. :bang:

Seriously, it should be 1 day..... and make the players play defense. Do away with the dunk contest until the best dunkers agree to participate.

Personally, I'd love to see a couple feature 1 on 1 games. Bron vs KD. Wall vs Irving. Blake vs Love.

^ I agree with the 1 on 1 contest. We may not get the biggest names at first but eventually I think it'll become something similar to what the dunk contest once was.

The one-on-one games would be dope. Too bad the player we'd want to see the most (Lebron) would never participate. He's too scared to be shown up.

I'd like to see a 3-on-3 tournament.

1 on 1 won't happen for a couple reasons…. first the injury issue and second what endorser wants to endorse the guy who got lit up in a one on one contest. The safety in numbers law applies here…..

This. Too much to lose in a one-on-one contest. Not least of all being pride. :man10:

Three-on-three would be cool.

As for a full week off... Nah. Suck it up. So many athletes in the past were so thankful to just BE All-Stars that they gave their all for it. Now our pampered spokesmen for the league demand more time off for the inconvenience. Get over yourselves.

Superstar players who would jump at the 1 v 1 game: Kobe and KD

I could see a handful of the PG's in the game being into it too. Lebron would run away from this so fast he would pull a muscle.
For what it's worth, the Lakers also clinched the Pacific Division, an achievement Bryant dismissed by saying "We don't hang divisions." No, only the big NBA championship banners are considered wall-worthy for the Lakers.

As for the length, if it means giving players more rest and less injuries / more time to recover, why not?

I'd totally tune in for a 1 v 1 tourney / event. Heck, go balls out and even have WWE type of intro music before the match. Have a championship belt instead of a trophy...

GET GOING ON IT, SILVER!!!

I think the NBA season as it is right now is very gruel to the body of these athletes....

playing almost every day for 6 months and then expecting them to work on their game in the summer. Its just absolutely insane and inhuman especially since its not just playing every day...the travelling every day is also insane. I think the season needs to have more free days in between without reducing the summer. So in other words...less games.

Not sure how to feel about this one unlike the NFL I prefer the NBA All Star stuff but not really sure it generates enough interest for this to be warranted.

http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/11267 ... 5-schedule

NBA considers longer All-Star break

The NBA is considering extending the All-Star break into a seven-day hiatus next season, according to a report by the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

Citing multiple sources, the Sun Sentinel reported that the league currently is using the week-long All-Star break as its "model" while filling out the 2014-15 season.

Several of the NBA's biggest stars, including LeBron James, have lobbied for a longer All-Star break, citing their busy schedules during the league's All-Star weekend.
The NBA could, however, revert back to its traditional four-day break at any point before officially releasing the schedule next month, according to the report.

If the league decides to implement the seven-day break, each team would consequently have at least one more back-to-back set of games, the Sun Sentinel reported.

Several of the NBA's biggest stars, including LeBron James, have lobbied the league to extend the break.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver revealed in February that he met personally with James during All-Star Weekend in New Orleans to discuss a longer break.

"One of the issues LeBron raised is a break during All-Star [Weekend]," Silver said during a radio interview with ESPN. "[For] a guy like LeBron, All-Star Weekend is not a break for him in any way. He's going around the clock with a combination of things the league is asking him to do, personal commitments, and I think it makes sense if we can work in the schedule a few days so the All-Stars can get a break as well."

Silver added at the time that a schedule change of that magnitude would have to be negotiated with the players' association.

yeah it is a great idea. but honestly I would be really bummed if it actually happens now that Kobe is on his way out. Kobe in his prime would have torn everyone up.

Kobe in his prime is probably the best one on one player ever. He would have dominated.

To add to the WWE thing:
Players playing in the 1v1 should be able to select a team of 3 others that they can "tag in" if they're tired or match up poorly with their opponent.

Actually, come to think of it, that sound a lot like pokemon with basketball players.
I want to hear "Beat LA" chants at a Clipper vs Laker game

How about making the all star weekend less of a spectacle? The events are at the point of being unwatchable.

If they stretch it to a week, I hope they make some of these NBA guys give more to the events... Or at least get creative and have more events/more exciting events. The Dunk Contest is almost completely broken. The 3 point competition is eh. The handles competition is boring. The celebrity game is dumb. The HORSE game is even boring and that's something everyone can relate to.

Would this make the season even longer, though? If they cut a few games to do a week off, cool. But there's no way they would because of the revenue. If it's still 82 long and they add more days off it drags on even longer.

They plan more back-to-backs in order to make up for the two or three games they'd miss. I guess that makes sense, but in a way I feel like that's not really helping the players as much as they think it is.
