NBA trademarks five names for Hornets… Mosquitos? Really?

Whatever they are going to be, the NBA’s New Orleans franchise is not going to be the Hornets much longer. Even David Stern said he would help speed along a name change for the franchise.

But are they going to be the Pelicans? A lot of people on online ripped that name when it leaked out, but it was frankly better than the other four names the league has taken out trademarks on.

The blog Behind the Buck Pass went the legal route and got the info on what the league and Hornets ownership is thinking:

Anil V. George, the attorney who typically handles the trademarks involving NBA brand names, filed trademarks on five new potential franchise names on behalf of the New Orleans Hornets NBA Limited Partnership….

The trademarks:

New Orleans Pelicans
New Orleans Rougarou
New Orleans Mosquitos
New Orleans Swamp Dogs
New Orleans Bullsharks

Are you kidding me?

Mosquitos? The New Orleans Team That Transmits Yellow Fever? That his just horrific, New Orleans ties or not.

Apparently a “Rougarou” is a mythical monster of the region, kind of their own Bigfoot or werewolf or whatever. Since I don’t want to have to explain that in every New Orleans story for the rest of time I oppose that name.

Bullsharks live in the Gulf of Mexico and that region, and they are a shark (one more likely to attack humans than a Great White). Swamp Dogs is the local nickname for alligators, according to Urban Dictionary. Those two suck less than the rest.

But if those are the choices — and if that is the ones where the trademark was filed than those are the choices — I’ll stick with Pelicans. Or, maybe find some other options.

New Orleans Purchase made me genuinely laugh, that was great.

New Orleans Quarters? What's their mascot exactly? :man10:

^ Reference to the Louisiana Purchase.

Those names are just insane by the way. What is the NBA thinking? The mosquitos?

Most of those names trademarked actually make Pelicans look decent in comparison. Only one of those listed I don't think is that bad is Bullsharks. Honestly though I like most of Hollywood Swinger's names more than the ones the Hornets actually trademarked. I actually think the New Orleans Mardi Gras sounds kinda cool. Really though, the Utah Jazz should just give them back their name.

Let's give team names back to where they belong and assign new names.

New Orleans Jazz
Utah Mormons
Minnesota Lakers
Los Angeles Mexicans

I think that the New Orleans Revelers is a great name and concept. It represents the most distinctive modern cultural phenomenon people associate with New Orleans...Mardi Gras. I love this logo and uniform design, which was posted on the sportslogos.net forum. A link to the original thread is below the image. The thread has a larger version of the pic above...I think the concept looks pretty awesome. I came up with this name and concept in 2003, when the NBA was announcing the Bobcats name...a name that I figured wouldn't last.

The End is nigh. Time for a total Cut and Shuffle. Kobe contract was a mistake...time to avoid making more. The future is here, whether we want it to be or not. An era is over, but for the death rattle, and it's time for the cycle to begin anew. Growth and change are scary and painful, but alas...nothing worth achieving comes easily.

Revelers isn't too bad, and neither is Bullsharks, though that might be too close to the Bulls. I'm warming up to Rougarou, though. It's like something out of a werewolf movie.

Hey, hey, hey, that's why cockroaches are called "palmetto" bugs in Florida. Sounds more appealing to the tourists. :man10:

It obviously should be New Orleans Jazz

and they should just rename the current Jazz team as "Utah Basketball". I don't think anyone would object to that.
There are two teams that play in the Staples Center:
the LA Lakers and NBA Clippers.
