NBA will use centralized instant replay center next season

I don't think this will make things better

Centralized replay on horizon for NBA

League execs say as soon as next season key calls could be made by officials reviewing video off site.

By next season, the NBA is planning to create and use a centralized replay center to help referees and speed up games.

"What we're in the process of doing is we're going to create a central location where we'll have people there who will be watching every game," NBA president of basketball operations Rod Thorn said Friday. "When the referees go over to the side, in many instances the [central replay center] will already know what happened and they'll be able to tell the referee, which will hopefully take less time."

The project is one of new commissioner Adam Silver's initiatives. The NBA would be mimicking a system the NHL started in 2011, when it created what is known as the "situation room" in Toronto where all goals from all games can be reviewed with calls communicated to the officials on the ice.

That experiment has been successful in shortening the time replays take in addition to removing some pressure from the referees on site.

The NFL is also studying the effects of creating a centralized replay center.

"It's still a work in progress for exactly how it's [going to work]," Thorn said. "On the line calls, like whether it's a 3-pointer or 2-pointer, or in many occasions they'll be able to tell the referee the ball was definitely [out of bounds], whatever team. That should help."

Over the last several years, the NBA has significantly expanded what is reviewable, especially at the ends of games. In addition to out of bounds calls and 3-pointers, officials can now review goaltending and even block/charge calls in the final two minutes and overtime.

In all, there are 14 things officials can review.

If they call flops, swing throughs and traveling fairly it will limit the effectiveness of the stat stars...... Which means they won't do anything like actually making the games fair.

When Chris Paul is on a 30 game suspension for cheating I'll believe they are interested in cleaning up the shoddy officiating.

Adam Silver speaking in NBA TV press conference now. Giving the "State of the League" speech of sorts.

I like what I'm hearing from Silver. He seems less orchestrated and more honest than Stern, and you can see he genuinely likes the game and is a fan.

Adam Silver has been in office for two minutes and I have already seen a 180 degree difference in the NBA. Silver should have been commissioner 10 years ago.

This would be awesome and much needed. I never thought the NBA would be the first major sport to have centralized instant replay. I know the MLB is close to getting it as well as the NFL.

Why I should be working for the NBA: I proposed an idea about 5 years ago thinking that the 4th ref (pretty sure that all games have an alternate official) should be sitting in front of a TV and making any replay calls. Would be much faster.
Every time I begin to ask, "Is he really as great as I think he is?" ...He proves that he is.
Every time I begin to wonder...He proves it...That is why I won't lose hope in him.
You know who I am talking about.

In addition to this, i think teams should get to challenge plays/calls (maybe 2 per half). That includes everything from fouls to flops, etc. Some plays are tougher to call, even in review but i think every team should have the right to challenge calls, sort of like the NFL except everything could be reviewable.

If he is a man with common sense, he will eliminate all this girly stuff and let some hard fouls go. This league is beyond soft where players aren't even allowed to show emotion. And that's because the refs are instructed to call it this way from higher ups. For instance, i had no idea until recently that if a player runs down the court after a call he disagreed with, it's a technical. That is just unreal.

This... Another 'only good on paper' rule like the flopping fines...

Agreed, but that ship has sailed. They won't reverse it. For some reason, fans like it when Hockey players fight, but they do not like basketball players fighting.

They should give an automatic and1 to players who complete a play with a "defender" hanging on their body. No FT. Just an extra point.

Same thing with flagrants. You can't hurt a millionaire with a $10000 fine. Make a flagrant 1 = 3 points. A flagrant 2 = 5 points + suspension.

Make the flagrant foul go away….. it was covered by 50 years with Technical Fouls and ejections. The completely bogus flagrant calls we have today are part of the problem in the game. No physicality is allowed anymore.

It was installed to stop altercations and it hasn't worked at all….. the idea that it would stop injuries was based on a foundation of vapor as well…. it can't limit what wasn't happening.

Of all the stupid rules in the last 20 years the Flagrant foul system is the stupidest and the one that can put the entire outcome of a game in the officials hands…… which is a really bad thing.
