Omer Asik Requests Trade From Rockets

Omer Asik Requests Trade From Rockets

Postby juninho on Fri Nov 15, 2013 4:37 am

NEW YORK – With his starting job gone and playing time slashed, Rockets center Omer Asik asked to be traded, two individuals with knowledge of the request said Thursday.

Asik, who started every game after signing with the Rockets last season, came off the bench Wednesday in Philadelphia but struggled, playing four minutes and not at all in the second half. He didn’t play in Thursday night’s 109-106 win over the Knicks.

Asik, a 7-0 center, made his trade request within the past 48 hours, a person familiar with the conversations said Thursday.

The Rockets have no trade involving Asik, 27, in the works, with one individual saying a deal is more likely in months than in days.

Asik declined comment, referring questions to his agent, Andy Miller, who also would not comment on the request.

“I would say the situation is very frustrating right now, and we’re trying to work through it,” Miller said. “For Omer, the objective has always been to continue to develop and grow as a player. That’s why we came to Houston in the first place. If that objective can’t be met, if we can’t get the right platform to grow and contribute as a player, it’s certainly frustrating.”

Asik, whose longest streak of regular-season NBA games played ended at 239, averaged 10.1 points and 11.7 rebounds last season. He is averaging just five points and 7.2 rebounds this season, with his playing time reduced to an average of 20.7 minutes per game.

Second-year forward Terrence Jones replaced Asik to start the second half Monday against Toronto and started on Wednesday in Philadelphia. Rockets coach Kevin McHale said the switch was largely about matchups, but in the second half against the 76ers, Jones returned to the game instead of Asik when Dwight Howard went out in the fourth quarter.

“I think the way they play and spread guys last night with Spencer Hawes and tonight with (the Knicks’ Andrea) Bargnani and Carmelo (Anthony), it’s just a better matchup for us,” McHale said. “Last night, when they backed up, they went smaller, put Lavoy Allen in, another guy who stayed out, so we went smaller, too.

“I liked a lot of stuff he and Dwight did together. They were big. They protected the rim. It’s going to be a lot of matchups, a lot how things work. He’s going to have to get out there and play. Will he start against some bigger teams? Possibly.”

But Asik would rather start for someone else.

according to the national press, i'm sure he's set to be traded for chris paul and kevin Durant...IF the rockets even choose to move him. I mean, MOREY IS IN CONTROL!

Morey effed it up. Everyone knew Asik won't be happy, he should have traded him right after getting Howard, when his value was high. Now, other teams will low ball him... which is good :man9:.

Ryan Anderson ... don't know if the Pelicans would do it , even if they still have not replaced Lopez at C

The Knicks could use a C right about now...

Why would they?

Like kenzo said, no one is going to give Houston as much as that anymore. Asik has almost no value anymore. He could probably be had for expiring contracts of matching salary. What team is going to give up a great piece to get him now?

With McGee out, and Faried apparently on the table, I think a Omer-Faried trade would work out for both teams.

But again why does Denver do that? They could give up much less to get Asik at this point. Obviously that's a decent trade for both sides (although Faried can't shoot), but if you're Denver you can just lowball and force Houston into a tough spot.

Pelicans wont make Anthony Davis full time pf. He doesnt fit well with Asik. Best Rockets can get is Amir Johnson and Fields.

i think the Anderson/asik swap makes a ton of sense for both teams, but you rarely see those trades actually happen.

I do agree, though; if i'm NO, i'm probably holding out for more than asik right now.

Is this dude worth a lottery pick? I'll admit I haven't seen much of him.

Interesting. A lotto pick in this years draft? That's a good deal. Even landing someone like a Ryan Anderson type would improve that roster. Cant' wait to see what they get for Asik...

What's next? McHale for SVG, Lin for Nelson? Dude had a team build around him, he left it. Good thing we gave him the boot (because that's how i see it, with Mike, Kobe), let him hold the Rockets hostage :man9:.

it would be funny if he did all this to get out of Orlando...so that he could re-create that situation.

as for asik: he's worth a late lotto pick, imo. so I could see him moved for a mediocre salary match (expiring) and a top-10 protected pick.

I could think of several trades that could benefit both sides, but I think Houston wants more than teams want to give. for example, dallas has marion and/or carter, both of whom could help that team. but i'm guessing superstar morey thinks this is beneath his wizardry.

Boy is Woj away off base here.... Our experts say he's barely worth an expiring contract. What are these multiple teams thinking?

This is great stuff in my opinion. He's going to sink that team big time. Get rid of a decent center so Clown can have the paint all to his unskilled and declining self as he's not even Orlando Dwight any more. Sure, get a stretch 4 and get smaller. All the eggs in the Dwight and Beard basket now. Lin's going to be gone because the new "clique" doesn't want him there for whatever reason, and McHale as well. Yao even took a shot at him after the loss to the Lakers. Suck it Rockets.

Agreed. Morey is going to try to find an idiot to fleece for a pick AND an impact player. I hope no one is dumb enough to help him.

I think he'd be worth a lottery pick in another draft, most likely last year's draft... but not this upcoming one.

Asik is an asset but if you have a shot at Parker, Wiggins or Randle, forget it.
There are two teams that play in the Staples Center:
the LA Lakers and NBA Clippers.
