MIAMI -- Pat Riley resigned as coach of the Miami Heat on Friday, saying the team's rebuilding process is on track enough for him to step aside.

Riley ranks second in NBA history with 1,110 victories, and he led the Los Angeles Lakers to four championships in the 1980s. But the Heat missed the playoffs the past two years, finishing last in the Atlantic Division at 25-57 last season.

He will be replaced as Miami's coach by Stan Van Gundy, his top assistant the past several seasons

this stinks, i really liked him and the heat :man6:

Wow.

Didn't see this coming, especially since Odom signed with the Heats with the intention of being coached by Riley.

Anyways, Riley should've retired once he left the Lakers because its all been downhill since then.

This for some reason, feels like bad news. I really wanted to see, how he would have handled the season this year, with his revamped team. If the the Heat have any success this year, it is because Riley busted his but in trying to make this club improve. Brand should personally thank Riles for getting him that huge contract from Sterling. Sterling would have never given that to Brand on his own.

i dont understand...if anything he shoulda resigned last year...this year he has the 2nd year and much more improved caron butler, a promising and young dwyane wade, and the newly acquired Lamar Odom...and he has always liked odom...why is he resigning? well anyway he is still the president of tha team so hes not completely out of Miami...hes jus not their head coach anymore...

I knew he was planning on retiring soon, but I thought he coach for a year or two more. I wonder when he decided to do this, if he was getting all these guys, and rookies, and the team in a decent position because he knew he was going to step down. Well now he will be doing all the behind the scenes stuff for the Heat.

I can't believe what I'm hearing... Well it had to end someday, I guess i didn't want this to happen so soon. He's a great coach, and most importantly he was a coach for the Lakers at one day in age. Good luck in whatever life brings his way!

what next for Riles?...

Postby ZenMaster on Sat Oct 25, 2003 7:29 am

I too always respected 'Riles'. He will be missed.
Guess he stepped down for a number of reasons:

1) Could be health problems we don't know about
2) The team might be up for sale soon anyways,
and with all the losses he prob'ly would've been 'asked'
to step aside regardless. It was just a matter of time,
better to do it now rather than later and have it get ugly
3) Could be the Lakers' top brass is waiting to see if
we indeed win it all this year, before giving Phil Jackson
his extension...if for whatever reason we don't (relax,
I AM a fan of over 25 years, I LOVE my boys...I am just
saying 'IF' here, people), then Phil J. will, in all likelihood,
probably leave and Jerry Buss will dial up Riles (not nec.
in that order). Riley will then sneak out of his current
"team president" job and come back home. He is just
'taking a year off', of sorts, b/c he knows all this. If he
can't come back here, mark my words, he WILL get a
job somewhere

Feedback y'all?....LATER

ya according to the health problems, it was reported in the LA times that he "had complained of feeling tired in recent seasons, which he also described as 'humiliating', as the heat fell from an east finalist in 97 to a 25-57 and 13th place in the conference last spring."

they also said that now that the heat was rebuilding, and they got ppl lke lamaar odom, it was a good time to give stan van gundy a shot

about ur idea of riles returnin to LA, now that would be crazy, but i still dont think PJ would leave if they lose this year...i think hed leave winning, and not a loser, and hed probably stay until payton/malone/shaq/kobe leave

He is also the team's GM, so it's possible he wants to help rebuild his team from that perspective, and recruit some decent guys. And a possibility is... then when he gets some good players and they start winning, he can say he couldn't stay away from coaching and come back.

He is probably just embarrassed, since they went from being a playoff contender every year, to a lottery team. He couldn't take losing that many games any more, and thought it may tarnish his reputation as a coach. So he decided to step down.

Or an even more likely reason why he retired.....he just couldn't bring himself to coach Samaki Walker.
