Drake is now a Toronto Raptors executive
Is he the next Jay-Z?

Drake has been spotted often at Toronto Raptors games for the past few years, but now the hip-hop star and the team are taking things to a new level. The Canadian-born star will sign on with the franchise to help with a variety of initiatives from the 2016 All-Star game to helping with the planned team’s image makeover heading into the 2014-15 season, the Globe and Mail and Toronto Star reported.

The Raptors averaged a mid-league rank of 91.6% capacity at home games last year, but attracted a near-league low 84.8% attendance when they were on the road.

More on his new role and Toronto’s plan for an image change from the Toronto Star:

The hip-hop star will also launch a clothing line in conjunction with the team. Most intriguingly, he is being asked to consult on a complete redesign of the club’s image to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the franchise in the 2014-15 season.

According to sources at MLSE, everything about the team is on the table . . . aside from the name. Give up your Huskies dreams. MLSE and Drake are sticking with dinosaurs.

Going forward, this will be more than a business arrangement.

It would be wrong to call what comes next a renaissance. That would imply that the Raptors have a legacy to build on. After 18 years, all they have is one playoff series win and Vinsanity to draw from. That’s it.

It’s within Drake’s power to change that.

While the partnership is already garnering a lot of comparisons to what Jay-Z did for the Brooklyn Nets over the past few years, the idea of celebrities working to help a brand revamp its image is nothing new. And many haven’t been nearly as successful as Jay-Z and Brooklyn were — take, for example, Alicia Keys and BlackBerry (though the Raptors, to be fair, probably won’t end up laying off a large amount of its workforce anytime soon). But at the very least, a partnership with Drake can at least help some of the Raptors’ players save some money on his new album.

Or, if he lives up to the expectations of his rap-turned-NBA guru predecessors, be a wild success that sends thousands of more people buying up Raptors jerseys or actually going to see them when they come into town.

More from the Toronto Star:

The potential is so exciting, they’re already starting to worry about it in the tower over the ACC.

“We just hope he doesn’t want to be an agent,” one key MLSE figure said, joking.

And also not joking at all.

Good move. I'm sure the Kitten Whisperer will make Toronto's image every bit as soft and moist as his songs.

I'm loving the Drake hate here, :man10: because I don't get his popularity. Every time I hear him rap I wonder why his voice sounds like Lil Wayne and he acts all hard, but on Degrassi he spoke in completely normal voice, I guess he was just that good of an actor. When did rappers start using fake, weird rap voices anyway? I can't stand his music and feel he's fake as can be, him helping the Raptors is pretty funny though.

Since I'm allergic to commercial "rap" music, I'm not familiar with drake's music but these hateful comments are pure comedy, especially the one above. :man10:

that would only be accomplished if you dont listen to the radio at all.

"For 212 of the last 222 weeks, at least one song by or featuring Drake has been in the top 10 of Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop airplay charts.")

so yeah, never hearing a single thing hes done in the past 5 years is pretty amazing. im not even a fan, just saying.

I lived in Korea for 4 years, so I was not following pop music at all. Plus, I am not a fan of hip-hop/r&b, and avoid terrestrial radio like the plague...so that's probably why.

I have seen him on the internet a bunch, but I couldn't for the life of me tell you a title of one of his songs.

Toronto Raptors to host ‘Drake Night’ in January

Before the start of the 2013-14 NBA season, the Toronto Raptors officially named Drake a global ambassador. The superstar rapper is sure to have his fingerprints all over Toronto’s 2016 All-Star Weekend festivities, and he’s helping the team with its image redesign that’s set to debut next season.

In the meantime, the Raptors have announced a special “Drake Night” next month at the Air Canada Centre:

The game is against the Brooklyn Nets, a team that used to count Jay Z as a minority owner. There will be a special-edition shirt available that somehow ties the Raptors in with Drake’s OVO brand.

The game will also feature a halftime performance by someone called “Future the Prince,” which is unfortunately not a collaboration between Future and Prince, which would be the greatest thing in the history of music..

With Drake taking a prominent role in the Raptors’ public image, it’s safe to say this won’t be the last of these themed nights.

Raptors to host “Drake Night” on Dec. 17. There are special shirts and everything.

You may think Mr. “last name ever, first name greatest” (gosh, now I want a Sprite) is an overblown, overhyped piece of… but they love him in his native Toronto. Which means when the 2016 All-Star Game goes to Toronto it’s going to be all Drake all the time.

But before then, Drake Night is coming to a Raptors game. As said on the OVO blog (via
SLAM) “All ticket holders will receive a limited edition OVO x RAPTORS T-shirt upon entry of the Air Canada Centre” for that game.

That night the Brooklyn Nets come to Toronto and the game will be broadcast on ESPN.

The Raptors are a feel-good story this season. They are 16-5 and on top of the East, with the second best offense in the NBA behind Kyle Lowry and, when healthy, DeMar DeRozan. They have one of the top home court advantages in the NBA (them or OKC gets the crown). Their GM isn’t afraid to say what he is really thinking. This is a team you can get behind.

I hope too much Drake doesn’t ruin that.
