Shortening the NBA season?

Shortening the NBA season?

Postby laakers on Sun Mar 30, 2014 10:30 pm

It's just a thought that has crossed my mind on occasion, and perhaps I think this because we've seen so many guys go down this year and in recent years. It might help prolong players' primes, and decrease the likelihood of going down due to late season exhaustion. It's not rare that commentators say that a player looks tired late into a season. They fly on planes after games at 4:00 in the morning. And I'm not talking anything outrageous, but maybe 7-10 games? The length of the season would be the same, there would just be more days between games on average. Adam Silver must have some agenda he wants to try to push, maybe he's thinking about this. Thoughts?

There is so much money involved in the game from TV/Advertisers to the guys selling popcorn in the stands that the odds of shortening the season would be about as remote as Putin getting out of Ukraine......

They used to play the same 82 in 3 weeks less time back in the day. It made for a lot of 3 in a rows and 5 in 7's. The union wanted the season expanded in time, not games to keep the risk of injury down.

Too much money from the TV deals to cut back. A shorter season would have to correlate to lower salaries. No player wants that.

The purist in me saids no. The 69-13 record the Lakers had in 1972 stood for 23 years until Jordan's Bulls topped it at 72-10. Now, 72-10 is a magical number. Every year, when there appears to be a super team, fans debate whether the record might fall. Some Laker fans even thought our team could do it heading into last year.

But back to backs are just bad for the game because you aren't seeing a team at their best. I don't think any team should have to play a back to back at home/road or vice versa. That's just asking too much. So maybe a 75 game season? That's a nice number and would really ease the load and get rid of a lot of demanding back to backs.

In a 75-game season, no one will ever get to 72 wins. Jordan's record will be safe. :man12:

there's so much good tv and there's an excess of bad basketball
i mean just look at how poorly prime time teams are playing
i'd rather have them not play. it would also make fantasy bball far more interesting w fewer games

^^Fantasy basketball?!…. Why even watch the games or follow a team? This also explains your view on players.

I can't for the life of me understand the allure of Fantasy Sports. Wast of time. I like to follow the actual players and their value and talents cannot be distilled into a stat to then "play" with.

It's like playing "Army" when I was a kid…..

Life's to short to pretend……

If you enjoy following other players not on the Lakers you would really enjoy fantasy basketball. It also doesn't take much time at all. You should join the CL league next season. :man1:

rofl
oh my gosh
i enjoy fantasy sports like most males in america
get over yourself

my view on players are based on observations that are backed by statistics
my opinions aren't just based on #s. they so happen to be reinforced by them. there's a huge difference.
but keep going on and on about how i don't watch games bc you know absolutely zero about my life.

Fantasy sports is a major marketing tool for the leagues...... I love the game.... Not really into supporting the leagues that much and if I do I'll buy $15 beers instead of buying jerseys and trading virtual stat sheets.

As for ignorant.... I think I'm pretty well up on it actually. That's why I'd doesn't interest me. I follow teams.... Not players. If you've read my posts you'd know that. It's probably why I don't see eye to eye with several guys around here. Howard being the biggest example with CP overrated next. Both fantastic Fantasy stat guys..... It seems that some forget the lakers aren't a fantasy team and stats mean far less in the real world.

I mean it when I said it has no interest to me..... I'd sooner play with an easy bake oven.....

60 games season ... 82 is too long and boring even for the B-Ball fanatic I am.

No back to back , no 4 games in 5 nights crap , less injuries and less bad games ...

Will never happen though
