J.R. Smith out 3-4 months after knee surgery, Knicks announce

New York Knicks guard J.R. Smith will need 12-16 weeks of recovery time after undergoing surgery on his left knee, the team announced Monday evening.

The Knicks said that Smith had patella tendon surgery and arthroscopy for a tear in the lateral meniscus of his left knee. His scheduled recovery time means that he could return during training camp or he could potentially miss the start of the season.

The team said that Smith’s injuries were chronic and “gradually worsened,” ultimately requiring surgery.

Just last week, the Knicks and Smith agreed on a four-year, $24.7 million contract. Smith, 27, averaged 18.1 points and 5.3 rebounds in 33.5 minutes per game last season, all career highs. He was named the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year.

He struggled, however, during the postseason, and it’s possible that his injuries played a role. He averaged 14.3 points per game on just 33.1 percent shooting from the field, which was down from 42.2 percent during the regular season.

The Knicks, my friends, are headed in the wrong direction. I know some in the media aren't allowed to write or say it but this ain't good.

Which is worse: Not knowing J.R. had a bad knee & signing him for 4-years or as Knicks claim, knowing it and still giving him 4 years?

J.R. Smith is now officially "sore left foot, day-to-day."

Mark my words. Some of the fools in the media will soon write "J.R.'s ahead of schedule" and "his knee never been this healthy." Sure.

Remember something else, J.R.'s deal didn't become official until July 10th. Five days later...major knee surgery. But hey, they knew about

If the surgery isn't such a big deal, why did the Knicks skip town before announcing it? Absolute joke. And the beat goes on....

I get it. Some fans are blind. Some Knicks media guys are on the payroll. But J.R.'s surgery is a major deal. Four months?

No wonder they were so desperate to sign Metta World Peace.

According to Knicks "J.R. Smith's injuries were chronic and gradually worsened." So why the heck did you give him a 4-yr contract? Holy crap

Frank Isola ‏@FisolaNYDN 57m
Here's all you need to know: They waited until after leaving the arena here in Vegas to announce this. They don't want questions asked. Joke

And don't believe this bull spin by some in the media that the Knicks new about this. Incredible.

The Knicks are saying J.R. could be out four months. How do you sign a guy to a four-year deal 10 days before major knee surgery?

um wow.

That's a huge blow. Both to morale and to their team. I don't know how that raving lunatic is, but he's right. Why in the hell was Smith given that contract if they knew he had chronic knee problems?

This sucks for Knicks fans.

Ouch, right after signing a big deal. I'm not sure I buy that the Knicks knew about this fully and gave that long of a deal. I know it's "4 months" and he might not miss much time, but still, if it's chronic and they knew I could see the deal going down to 2 or 3 years.

That's one tight ship they're operating in New York. A real well-run organization their running handing out contracts to players they know are injured.

I dont think they knew, and thats not a good look for them. He's still a relatively young guy, but after he didn't exactly light it up to end his playoffs so you'd think the Knicks would cover their bases. Oh well.

There must be some temporal distortion in the Garden tha inhibits higher intellectual functions in the GM's office..... :man10:

First wanting to sign JR Smith in the first place knowing his history then not even getting a physical before giving him 27 million?

I think this is also why the Knicks got JR at a "discount"....I mean let's face it, he should be getting more money than stupid JJ Redick....I thought he would surely get overpaid this summer but instead he's getting a contract that pays him 5M per year....I don't really see this is as a huge issue...he'll come back in time for the start of the season and I'm sure he'll be ok. It's not like he tore his ACL. He'll be fine, and Knicks got him at a discount because of it too....as they stated they knew about his injury so they used that against him in negotiations and ultimately got a discounted JR Smith....makes complete sense to me. (Even though I think JR is worth about 5M...in today's market, with all these overpaid players....JR is worth more than that...or at the very least he's worth more than guys like JJ Redick and Martell Webster...both of whom got paid the same amount or more.)

This could be a reason that Carmelo is considering leaving too. This organization just isn't run properly... They don't know how to construct real winners and they're so hit and miss with their moves that I'd be frustrated as their top player.

Interesting that JJ is "stupid" in your estimation. His value on a Fantasy Team is far different than on a championship contending team. Webster and Redick are more valuable to a team overall than JR Smith and got paid because I think there is some recognition of that.

Smith is like Smush Parker with game..... mentally he just doesn't get it. He has shot his teams our of many more games than's he shot them into over the years. He breaks the offense, plays no defense, isn't a distributor or creator for anyone else and folds like a Walmart Chase Lounge when there is the slightest pressure on him.

I'd take Redick 6 days a week and on Sunday over 10 minutes of JR Smith if I were building or maintaining a team with a shot. Stats' don't compare but EVERYTHING else is in Redick's favor and it's not that close.
