Source: Pacers Will Look To Trade Danny Granger

By Martin Knezevic

You heard it here first…Danny Granger will not be a Pacer at this time next year.

According to people close to the Indiana front office, management will actively look to move Granger this upcoming season if not next offseason.

There are numerous reasons behind their thinking, both financial and basketball.

Danny Granger is due $27 million over the next two seasons. Yes, he’s the team’s leading scorer and spiritual leader (see altercations with Lebron James and Dwyane Wade…oh and even Larry Sanders). However, he is no longer the face of the franchise, Roy Hibbert is. Roy, coincidentally, just signed a maximum contract (courtesy of the Portland Trail Blazers).

It is conceivable to pay both players that much money, but the real issue is the future of swingman Paul George. While Danny is a finished product and one-time All-Star, Pacers management feels that Paul can exceed that in the coming years. His contract will be up in 2014 and Indiana is simply not going to let another team come in and outbid them for their homegrown stud. Also, George has been playing SG the past two seasons despite being more of a small forward. The longer Granger is occupying that SF spot in the starting lineup the more Paul’s growth is hindered. It’s time he assume his rightful position and grow into a star role, much like Danny once did.

The Pacers have a lot of things they can accomplish with Granger’s money. The team still needs to improve their depth on the frontline to tangle with the rim-attacking Heat and the new Bynum-led Sixers. Power forward David West is on the decline (and will be a free agent next summer) while Tyler Hansbrough and Miles Plumlee are merely a step up from Jeff Pendergraph. Indiana lost Darren Collison this summer and replaced him with…D.J. Augustin, hardly an upgrade. Then they lost Leandro Barbosa while netting the mercurial Gerald Green. Other than keeping Hibbert, it’s been a very average summer in Indiana as they hope to grow from within. I agree, but you still need depth to get through an 82-game season and deep into the playoffs.

Much the same way that Philadelphia recently traded Andre Iguodala and that Memphis continues to gauge interest in Rudy Gay, so will Indiana try and move Danny Granger in the near future. All three guys are talented star-caliber players…..but they are not the face of their franchises.

To sum up: Roy Hibbert is the present, Paul George is the future…..and Danny Granger is just a well-paid scorer.

That “star” money can be spent better elsewhere for a team hoping to take the next step.

Pau and Ebanks for Granger and West...... That would make us just about perfectly balanced..... and strengthen the bench even more by putting MWP on the bench....

I love Pau, but having West and Granger would be very exciting. West especially.

Smart move by Pacers. Personally think they should have traded him before last year, a sell high of sorts. I think this is as good as he'll get, and Paul George has huge potential. You can argue George already does more things on the floor than Granger
There are two teams that play in the Staples Center:
the LA Lakers and NBA Clippers.

West has that sweet midrange game, and Granger is money from 3. I loved West's leadership in the playoffs, and say what you want about Granger, I like the fact that he didn't back down from Lebron or Wade. He got owned, sure. but I like that he didn't give them any respect in that series, and went hard at them.

I like it.

I've been for this move since before this move was a move.

I would do it because of the Nash factor ( and Pau not showing up for 2 straight postseasons) ... even if I'm not a fan of both players ... West isn't the same after his injury ( couldn't take advantage of being guarded by Battier most of the time :disagree: ) but the pick n pop with Nash could be deadly ... not a fan of Granger shots selection and overall game as well

I would be hesitant on this trade because I wouldn't want us to re-up Granger at all ... let him walk as a FA , you're not winning anything with him as a 2nd option ... he would do fine with Nash/Kebo/D12 for 2 seasons though

I could be behind this. I've gotten attached to the idea of Pau being able to help us, but I'm still salty after 2 bad post-seasons in a row. I'd do the trade, but I'd want a pick or something back. We have the leverage again because we know they want to trade, we don't have to.

Nash/Blake/Duhon
Bryant/Meeks/Odom
Granger/Artest
West/Jamison/Clark
Howard/Hill

Exactly. I've been advocating attemping to acquire a top 10-12 SF. Granger averaged almost 19 pts a game, shoots lights out from three, is a better catch & shoot player than Ron, and has the ability to create his own shot. He'd be a perfect fit!

Even if it was Granger for Pau straight up, its a fair trade IMO. We could easily slide Hill or Jamison into the starting 4 spot, sign Kenyon Martin, and be ready to go. But I'm down with David WEst too as he would fit in PERFECTLY with Nash.

Nash
Kobe

West

Pau / Hibbert would run the East IMO.

There's not many, if any, better combo's of PF/C in the East. Maybe Bynum / Thaddeus Young.

West is one of the most overrated player in the NBA and Granger is at times really good, at times not so much. Kinda torn on this that suggested deal but I guess if push came to shove, I'd take it.

West is probably the best PF in the league at running the pick and roll and the pick and pop.... he's a good face up shooter to 18 feet and an above average rebounder. He is declining but he's still solid and a better fit for Howard because he isn't a post up player and he needs to be covered out to 18 feet.

Granger showed some grit and ability guarding LeBron and he did as well as anyone in the league last year on him.... He needs to be respected from 25 feet in thus opening the floor for Howard more.

West comes off the books next summer if we didn't pick up the team option.... the year after that if we did.... Granger has 2 years left....

This move frees up a ton of space for Howard which he needs to operate.... also it give Nash a couple great options if/when anyone tries to double Howard or Kobe....

Agreed, but it'd be extremely surprised if this happened. I think the FO is done, at least when it comes to big trades.. Plus, I wouldn't be surprised if Indiana found a better deal than ours. Yeah Pau & Hibbert would be great, but they aren't beating Miami even with that and they know it. Plus, Pau is not precisely young and he's getting 18M a year.

LOL no it wouldn't. Pau is a MUCH better player than Granger. Making that trade would make us considerably worse. No idea why people wanna get rid of Pau is bad. Yeah he's not what he used to be, but he's still an elite bigman and he's a perfect fit next to Howard and Nash.
