DeMarcus Cousins Demands Trade From Kings

Image

DeMarcus Cousins has formally requested a trade and has been directed not to attend tonight’s game against the Hornets.

Kings coach Paul Westphal released the following statement:

“Whenever a new season begins, in any sport, there is great hope that everything will progress in only a steady, upward direction. As we all know, it seldom happens like that in this life!

“As coaches, we can only ask that our players do everything they can to improve themselves as individuals and teammates. If they do this with all their hearts, we live with the results.

“Everything that happens on a team does not become known to the public. This is how it should be. However, when a player continually, aggressively, lets it be known that he is unwilling/unable to embrace traveling in the same direction as his team, it cannot be ignored indefinitely.

“DeMarcus Cousins has demanded to be traded. In the best interest of our team as we go forward, he has been directed by me, with the support of management, to stay home from the New Orleans game tonight.”

Kings Not Expected To Trade DeMarcus Cousins

Kings Not Expected To Trade DeMarcus Cousins

Image

By Marc J. Spears and Adrian Wojnarowski, Yahoo! Sports

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Hours before Sacramento Kings coach Paul Westphal ordered DeMarcus Cousins to stay away from Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Hornets, the temperamental center had yet another shouting match with Westphal in the coach’s office, sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Westphal and Cousins’ agent John Grieg are at odds over whether Cousins issued a actual trade demand – the coach said yes, the agent no – but a Kings player said he heard the center yelling at Westphal that he wanted out of Sacramento, sources said.

“Trade me now,” Cousins was heard to yell from the coach’s office after Saturday’s loss to the New York Knicks, a source told Y! Sports.

Before the Kings’ 96-80 victory over the Hornets Sunday, Westphal told reporters that Cousins requested trades on Dec. 24 and again after Saturday night’s loss to the Knicks. In a statement released by the Kings earlier Sunday, Westphal said he ordered Cousins to stay away from that evening’s game because Cousins “continually, aggressively, lets it be known that he is unwilling/unable to embrace traveling in the same direction as his team.”

Kings co-owner Joe Maloof and general manager Geoff Petrie said they will not trade Cousins, regardless of his wishes. Cousins, 21, is in the second year of a rookie contract paying him $3.6 million this season, and it would be tough for the Kings to get equal value for a talented player who already has a long history of throwing temper tantrums.

“We’re happy that he’s a King,” Maloof told Y! Sports. “But when a coach asks you to do something, you got to do it. We’re not trading him. …We have great expectations for him. It’s just one of those things that happens.

“Sooner or later he’ll understand what the NBA is about. Just get along with people. That’s all.”

[ Also: LeBron James gets engaged to longtime girlfriend ]

Teams interested in Cousins have called the Kings, but none believes the team will seriously consider trading him so early in his career. Several rival executives expect the Kings will eventually make a coaching change and try a tougher style with Cousins.

“Once you saw that release only came from Westphal, that was a telltale sign that this was a coach venting and not a call to the league by management and ownership that they were trading Cousins,” one Eastern Conference executive told Y! Sports.

Cousins had nine points and 11 rebounds against the Knicks and asked Westphal afterward if he could meet with him. The two met in the coach’s office, a source said. Cousins had told reporters he wasn’t happy with the team’s offense. Westphal told Cousins in a private meeting Sunday morning that he wouldn’t be playing in the Hornets game, a source said.

Just last week, Cousins had another verbal altercation with Westphal after Westphal called him for a technical in practice, several sources said.

Cousins is an immensely talented young player, which is why the University of Kentucky and the Kings have tolerated his behavior over the past two seasons. The fifth overall pick in the 2010 draft pushed through a rookie season full of spectacular promise on the floor tempered with volatile, immature behavior on and off the court. The Kings disciplined Cousins several times for behavioral issues, and Cousins had run-ins with Sacramento coaches, including Westphal, former assistants Truck Robinson and Mario Elie, and strength-and-conditioning coach Daniel Shapiro. Cousins was also was suspended after a locker-room altercation with teammate Donte Greene last season after Greene didn’t pass him the ball for a potential game-winning shot in a loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. At the time, Greene called Cousins “spoiled,” one source said, a reference to the franchise’s coddling of its young center.

“He’s selfish,” one source close to the team said of Cousins. “He’s always angry or clowning. He needs to change. The Kings have been great about covering things up for him, and his agent has been protecting him.

“He’s always miserable. He acts like he’s entitled.”

Some players are disillusioned with the constant drain of Cousins’ tantrums, sulking and absence of professionalism. “He’s a bully, and they let him get away with it,” one source said. “No one wants to deal with the guy.”

Cousins is averaging 13 points and 11.2 rebounds in four games. The Kings don’t doubt Cousins’ talent, but they want to see him become more professional.

“He’s passionate and he wants to win, but he just needs to learn how to control his actions,” Kings center Chuck Hayes said. “Some things are better left unsaid. And if you’re not feeling the system, the team, the players, don’t let your body language say it.”

Said Kings guard Tyreke Evans: “I’ve known DeMarcus for a long time and I want nothing but the best for him, but hopefully he can keep his head on straight and be a part of this team because we need him.”

Cousins accompanied the Kings on their flight to Memphis Monday, but team officials had yet to say whether he will play on Tuesday.

“He just has to put away the childish things and start to grow up,” Petrie said. “Learn to be more professional. Learn to put in effort and time and grow as a player. We want to help him help himself and the team.”

The Kings are 2-3 this season. Prior to Sunday’s victory, Petrie was asked about Westphal’s performance as coach.

“I don’t think anyone is happy with the way we are playing,” Petrie said. “We have to play better. That’s what we are all working on.”

LOL! In Detroit, it would be more of the same. They have a lot of young players without any veteran leadership and nobody that can give Cousins' any direction & get in his face when he does act like a child. The Celtics would be ideal; they need another big man & have Rivers, KG, and other veteran leaders that will make it a point to get into Cousins' face should he act out in any way. That's what he needs at this point if he plans on staying in the league & being productive.

Nets Interested In Trading For DeMarcus Cousins

Nets Interested In Trading For DeMarcus Cousins

Image

By Stefan Bondy / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

The Nets are getting Kris Humphries back sooner than expected, but that’s not stopping them from pursuing a risky personality for a frontcourt upgrade.

According to a league source, the Nets are looking to trade for Kings center DeMarcus Cousins, who earlier this week had a falling-out with Sacramento coach Paul Westphal.

It’s unclear if the Kings are ready to deal Cousins — the No. 4 pick in 2010 out of Kentucky — but the team released a statement Sunday condemning the 21-year-old for his lack of commitment to the club while stating he demanded a trade.

Cousins, who was excused from Sunday’s game in New Orleans and dressed Tuesday night against the Grizzlies, denied that he demanded a trade, and the Kings said they won’t deal him. Still, the animosity between the struggling team and its top big man — which dates back to last season when Cousins was kicked out of practice — leaves the impression that a separation is inevitable. Cousins was averaging 13 points and 11.3 rebounds in four games entering Tuesday night.

The Nets (1-5), who will be without starting center Brook Lopez for at least another month, and could flip any trade acquisition for Dwight Howard, want to pick up the pieces. They passed on drafting Cousins after working him out, taking Derrick Favors instead at No. 3.

Humphries, meanwhile, only has a sprained shoulder and is listed as day-to-day, an MRI revealed Tuesday, a day after Avery Johnson was concerned that his leading rebounder “could barely move his shoulder.”

Humphries, who is averaging 12.4 points and 10 rebounds, will travel with the Nets for Wednesday’s game in Boston, but it’s unclear if he’ll be available. Before Monday’s loss to the Pacers, which Humphries missed, Johnson said he didn't anticipate the 26-year-old would make the Boston trip.

Celtics Call Kings On DeMarcus Cousins

Image

Like many other teams around the NBA, the Celtics have called the Kings about DeMarcus Cousins.

“It’s highly unlikely,” a league source said of the Celtics’ chances of landing Cousins. “I’m not sure that any team is going to get him. The thing is that everyone knows he’s a wreck. They’re not going to get what he’s worth.”

Sources: Celtics and Pistons Extremely Interested In DeMarcus Cousins

The Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons are two teams that have made it clear they are highly interested in DeMarcus Cousins if and when he becomes available, according to front office sources.

Still, Cousins assuredly has plenty more teams interested in acquiring him from the Sacramento Kings.

He's a very talented idiot. I'd welcome him on other teams like the Celtics. He'd do wonders to ruining their chemistry.

But what would the Celtics trade the Kings, all the Celts have is perimeter backcourt players and the Kings have a ton of those already.

Would have to be a 3 team trade.

Cousins makes Bynum and Howard look mature. If I was a team like the Celtics would have championship aspirations I would stay as far away as possible from a knuckle headed cancer like Cousins.

Despite DeMarcus Cousins' recent suspension handed out by the Sacramento Kings, co-owners Gavin and Joe Maloof are still reluctant to trade the young big man, according to sources.

Among potential suitors, there is a growing belief that GM Geoff Petrie would be willing to part ways with Cousins in exchange for a quality veteran player or two who could bring instant improvement.

If Cousins had the impact of a Dennis Rodman, then I could understand them wanting to keep him.

IMO they are just saying that so they have as much leverage as they can get during negotiations.

tough to find the right trade match. the team that wants him needs to be a bubble playoff team, not a young one, either. and they have to have something sac would want or be able to deliver it in a three-way. interesting to see how it plays out. is he a jr rider type headcase or a sheed/zbo type headcase?

Didn't Sheed get caught with another of the "JailBlazers" in a car smoking weed.... with a trunk full of more weed?....

As for someone "fixing" Cousins....... don't think it's happening.

I'm talking about Isiah Ryder drugs. IE Crack/Cocaine/Meth. Not herb.

Also, he hasn't gotten into trouble with the law either. Can't say the same for one of his teammates.

He's just a young chump on a team filled with other young chumps. KG is a pansy, but I doubt Demarcus would ever get in a word over Rondo, Pierce, Terry, KG or Doc. They're mostly douchebags and I hate them, but honestly there probably isn't a better team for him to go to than Boston. (for his sake, not for ours lol)

I view them as just the opposite actually. Before the trio of Garnett, Allen, and Pierce along with Doc Rivers might have quelled any kind of ruffian in a teammate.

I think these days morale in Boston is at possibly a 3 year low. They have been every bit as weak as us this season but with much closer to their full contingency than we have been. Another bad egg might be enough to finally break them completely.

Yeah I agree. If there is a team that can handle cousins, its boston, and as mch as i'd hate to say it, the clippers. But they're not getting him. Boston seems most likely to be able to deal with his shenanigans.

Paul Westphal hasn't been the Kings coach for over a year...where did those articles come from??

Yeah I think the Celtics would still benefit from having him even if he was not really contributing to the team's chemistry. They have good chemistry now don't they? Yet they are barely making the playoffs
Cousins is a dumb MFer, but he is VERY talented, young, and has a lot of size, which Boston DESPERATELY needs. If I was Boston I'd take a chance (assuming there weren't any other legit centers available), I too feel they could reign him in (? is that the phrase?)

Gortat could be a nice target for Boston too. Less talented, less upside (older), but not a headcase like Cousins..
They just need size, at both ends of the floor.

Who wouldn't love to see Cousins get on the Celtics roster, then go all selfish, immature knucklehead on them, KG gets all in his grill about it in the locker room, big brawl ensues, Cousins busts KG up bad like he's been needing forever, and BOOM goes the dynamite!!

Why on earth would the Pistons be interested in this moron? They have a great future already with Monroe, and Drummond at 4/5. If I were a GM I wouldn't want a guy like Cousins anywhere near any of my young prospects.

I don't think Cousins is the answer to the Celtics. Just because the Celtics have a great group of vets(and a great players coach too) doesn't mean every knucklehead who walks in will immediately "buy in" and play hard, and unselfish. Most recent example? Darko.

If the Celtics somehow end up with Rondo/KG/Pierce/Cousins, they'll be a better team than they are now. Between those 3 and Doc, they'll set Cousins straight... and it could be devastating.
There are two teams that play in the Staples Center:
the LA Lakers and NBA Clippers.
