The NBA has turned into a joke...

Postby TheOp on Wed Feb 12, 2014 5:41 pm

I just checked the Eastern Conference standings...The Toronto Raptors are now the 3rd seed. Followed by the Rose-less Deng-less Chicago Bulls. With the 23-29 Bobcats just barely holding on to that 8th seed.

Meanwhile, the usual suspects are at the bottom tanking harder then ever.

I don't know. I think it's not terribly entertaining. When LA isn't playing, I'm not watching (unless it's Bynum). And I've been following more boxscores than watching games this year without Kobe. I'm not alone.

Well for Lakers fans this is certainly some dark times in the league and it's hard to appreciate what's happening with teams you don't care about. But I think even trying to set that bias aside somewhat it is appropriate to say this is a transitional/in-between era right now. Certain things have become a bit too stratified while other things seem to have atrophied or diminished. Any given night will have great games that are entertaining but it often feels harder to find them and many of the traditionally dominant teams are having identity crises now. Additionally, many of the historic coaches who had been in the league forever have left or are on their way out and thus far there haven't been many would-be successors. Front Offices around the league seem to be a bit more disorganized than ever with controlling interests trying to make the game more coldly procedural in a business sense. (Which, has likely always been there but we're more exposed to it now)

On top of all that there are just so many injuries nowadays it seems. This season in particular but really you can look at the past 4 or 5 seasons and it's just shocking how top tier players have lost irreplaceable months and seasons.

But I think it'll come around eventually. The game evolves every year, the player pool evolves every couple of years. The only thing that actually worries me is that the league has never been more successful financially than it is right now and that is correlated with a type of basketball many fans of the *game* find to be a bit less interesting or worthwhile. If profitability can decouple itself from the product in this way then maybe things'll be harder to 'correct' for the basketball fan. But talent is still talent and you never know when that next great 1996-caliber draft class will show up.

The east being horrendous isn't a big issue. The real issue is that the league is manufacturing fake superstars(Harden), allowing these guys to flop, whine, and moan.

Watching bad teams like Orlando or the Bucks isn't nearly as bad as watching 48 minutes of James Harden and Chris Paul play some of the softest basketball i've ever seen. Hell, even the current "face of the league" Jebron Lames is a notorious flopper. Flopping has ruined the NBA for me. So many games are negatively effected due to flopping and bad reffing.

Durant on the other hand... That dude is a baller, flat out. I love watching him play.

Fixed.
We watch the NBA because we love the sport. It's really sad to see how much the NBA blatantly only cares about $.
And it's so ironic that the headline on NBA.com is "East, West both donate $250K to charities". The NBA is a $5 BILLION market. That's the best they can do?

Tell that to the owners. Bottom line first, second, and third - of course this is not fact, this is my generalization of 99% of the owners.

the difference for me with durant is that he's at least proven that if you don't foul him, he's probably going to get 50. harden (like wade before him) depends on the officials; durant (like kobe before him) just benefits. there is a difference, though, imo.
