Things you miss about the NBA

Things you miss about the NBA

Postby Pig Miller on Tue Nov 27, 2012 10:23 pm

Was just thinking about things I miss about the NBA (not specific players)

1) NBA fights. Shaq tackling Barkley. Van Gundy on Mourning's leg. Good times.

2) Hand check rule. Loved that rough style of play.

3) Old arenas. The Forum, the Boston Garden. At least we still have MSG.

4) Trash talking. I know they still do it, but they have to hide it more. loved it when Jordan and Payton would be clearly jawing back and forth.

5) Great nicknames: The Worm, Microwave Vinnie Johnson, Reignman, The Admiral

I miss "It's FANtastic".

I also miss centers.
There are two teams that play in the Staples Center:
the LA Lakers and NBA Clippers.

1--nut hugger shorts
2--goggles, none of this face shield nonsense
3--no 3 pt line. I think it helped create better players. Players could hit the mid-range, the long-range, there seemed to be better offensive production
4--the physical play and the trash talk. Those two things seemed to bring more intensity and drama to watching the games.
5--players really disliking other players, maybe it's me, but it seems all the players are friends off the court and it makes the rivalries watered down. This may be a by-product of the lack of trash talk and physical play too.

Emotion.

Players have to act like robots because of the stupid technical foul rules.

While I love the NBA on NBC theme, the CBS one from the 80's was also top notch.

1. NBA on NBC

i still miss watching games on NBC when i was a kid. watching those old games sure brings me back, especially to those 2000-2002 lakers dynasty teams

2. Real, Dominant Centers

long gone are the days where centers like shaq, hakeem, robinson, ewing, and mourning were the most feared and dominating players in the league. now the only good center in the league is dwight and he's nowhere near the dominating force these guys were in their day. the center is such a dead art that they dont even have centers on the AS ballot anymore :man10:

3. When more than 3 teams had a chance at winning the title

it wasn't that long ago where it was a free for all between 6-7 teams when it came to the NBA championship. now with the rise of "super teams" there are only a few teams who have a real shot at a title

2. Burnt Marshmallow Afros

4. The game pace of the early 90's

6. Tape Delay national televising.... even during the playoffs and finals
7. Bill Russell and Rick Berry with Dick Stockton broad cast team (only one by the way because they only televised one game a week)
8. Kareem with hair
9. Weekly cocaine rumors surrounding the top 10 or 15 players in the game

Roos, why do you miss tape delay? I rejoiced when KCAL stepped out of the stone age and started playing Laker games live.

It was a poor attempt at humor while showing that the "good ol days" weren't that good in some respects. :man10:

One thing more than all else: Chicky Baby. Chick Hearn = the GOAT. He made the games for me as much as any player or anything else.
