Derrick Williams' Agent Inquires About Trade Possibility

Image

If agent Rob Pelinka had a personal Twitter account, he might echo his client's claims from last February.

It was then that Minnesota Timberwolves forward Derrick Williams tweeted, "Anybody ever felt like a caged lion?"

According to a team source, Pelinka has voiced his displeasure with Williams' lack of playing time. He hasn't gone as far as to request a trade, but he has inquired about the possibility that one will come.

The Wolves' stance from the source: "We told him to wait for our team to come together. Wait for Derrick to play with Ricky (Rubio). When they played together last year, Williams benefited greatly."

As for when Rubio will make his season debut, the source said he was angling to play on Friday night against Cleveland. However, the source said the medical staff and coaches will have final say.

The more likely scenario is Rubio first plays in another home game on Dec. 15 against Dallas. He does want to have his first game be at Target Center.

Trade talk

Timberwolves president of basketball operations David Kahn is casually talking to other general managers, but nothing is percolating.

As for the ESPN report that they offered center Nikola Pekovic and Williams for Lakers center/forward Pau Gasol, a team source said numerous conversations happened this summer. Gasol very much remains on their radar, but no offer was made recently.

Until Gasol is moved, count the Timberwolves as heavily interested. In fact, the source said ownership is willing to go over the luxury tax for the 2013-14 season if need be. Gasol is guaranteed $19,285,850 next year.

The source was pretty convinced any Gasol trade is way more likely to include a third team.

i feel like i'vesaid this in another thread (maybe about pau trades?): i know williams has been bad, but i think he's one of those guys worth gambling on. he's an undersized pf, though, not a big sf. if a team gave him a legit chance to learn how to play that spot, they might see a big return on their investment. but minny's not that team. love is obviously better, and kirilenko can slide between 3 and 4 the way they were hoping williams could. IF the lakers felt it necessary to deal pau, that's the kind of piece i'd want back (along with other things). young, athletic, theoretically fits well next to low post center.

Timberwolves Make Derrick Williams & Alexey Shved Available In Trade Talks

Image

The Minnesota Timberwolves will do everything within their power to keep Kevin Love long-term and that includes improving their roster in the short-term to improve their playoff chances.

The Wolves are making both Derrick Williams and Alexey Shved available via trade in exchange for veterans, according to sources.

Williams was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft.

I was for the trade a year and a half ago for he and Beasley but am now glad that we didn't. This guy has bust written all over him. He has progressed exactly zero in this league on a team that needed him.

If they want to trade him to a 3rd team for stuff we can actually build around I'm all for it. I just don't think he's much more than an expiring contract at this point. His next contract will be a one year one most likely.

Short of acquiring a second All-Star, I don't think there's anything Minnesota can do to keep Love there. Love strikes me as a guy who wants success AND stardom, but will settle for success if he can get it.

If there's no success for them, he's not staying.

great asset management there, wolves. could have sold higher when it was painfully obvious that his only chance at success was at the same position as your star player. but no, let's wait until we have to bench him for poor play, then test the market. that's the ticket.

Sounds like Houston and Asik except that Minnesota's best acquisition this summer was Kevin Martin and Houston's was Dwight Howard.

Minnesota is just incapable of supporting a super star in my opinion... Kevin Garnett was their best bet and even he left.

Poor play is all he's done consistently since coming into the league.

this time a year ago, they still could have moved him for an impact veteran, imo.

If Asik is worth just an expiring then this guy could be had for some UN-opened icy-hot and a couple packs of gatoraid cups...

we don't know what asik is worth yet. and my point wasn't that Williams was worth something now (he's not); it was that he was worth something then. in other words, you're kind of making my point.

:man3:

I thought I was making that point from my initial post. The difference is that I'm not sure he had much more value at any point in his career once everyone saw him play at this level.

don't know if I can dig up the articles, but i'm pretty sure the names bandied about in Williams trade scenarios in the past were considerably better than those that will be now.

he showed some promise as an undersized pf. no one knew that he wouldn't be able to stretch his range, which has really been the problem.

Names in rumors isn't his value. If it were the trade would have happened.

A hurt and hobbled JO was rumored to Bynum's value at one point. Instead WH had to settle for Dwight Howard.

As for Williams' rumors.... Wasn't he supposedly coming to us as part of the Fisher salary dump?

Kings officially traded Luc Richard Mbah a Moute to Wolves for Derrick Williams. Just talked to Pete D’Alessandro. I'll post interview soon.
