I'd take Rudy...... He'd be the first real SF we've had since Rice or Caron.

Roos, you're a smart dude, so i'll assume you don't realize he's making ~$18M this year (and next) when you made that statement

That was a statement on his ability. As for cost.... We have a 19.7 million PF who is stealing from us. Gay makes 75% of his salary.

Not saying this was a good trade for the Kings, but a lineup of :-

C- DeMarcus Cousins
PF - Derrick Williams
SF - Rudy Gay
SG - Ben McLemore
PG - Isaiah Thomas

is still a pretty good lineup, but unfortunately this still not enough to make the Kings into the playoffs in the West this year, in the East YES big chance they will make into the playoffs but not in the deep West, it's just a tough task to climb into the playoffs in the West compare to the East.

In the east they would honestly have a chance at 3rd place with that line up. In the west, they are already in a huge hole and it's not gonna get any easier learning how to play together on the fly. Overall, I think it's a good trade for them, even knowing Gay's crappy contract. That's a great starting 5 right there.

Rudy has been absolutely awful so far this season. He's the type of guy who should be a star based on his athleticism, and NBA body, but his IQ has to be among the league worst. To make matters worse, Casey told him to put on weight so he could play the 4 spot this season, and he looks like he lost his speed and athleticism- Basically his biggest advantages. I assume the Raptors have to be ecstatic about having his salary off the books. Masai has already cleared two toxic players on huge contracts which is pretty impressive.

The problem with Rudy Gay starts with his pay. He's paid like a superstar, so he thinks he has the green light to take the superstar shots. I don't see him changing anytime soon, especially for another scrub team like the Kings.

One more thing, i'm sure i'm not the only one wondering if he'll pull a pseudo-leadership move again by banning stat sheets in the Kings locker room :man10:

Watching Cousins/Thomas/Thornton/Gay fight for shots will be interesting to see.

3 out of the 4 ain't worth a damn if they aren't scoring.

Oh I don't know about that Doc…. I think you're shorting the 4th one in that statement…..

Seriously, Gas can play both ends of the floor the others are all deeply flawed when they don't have the ball in their hand.

I generally agree with a lot of the things you type Roos, but I have to strongly disagree with this one. Rudy isn't much of a factor if he's not scoring. I've watched him closely since the Raptors acquired him last year, and the guy is not a great player imo. His offensive game is very flawed. If he's not scoring, he's not doing much on offense. He's terrible at creating for teammates, has tunnel vision, and just isn't a great passer. Look at this example of his terrible tunnel vision from a week or so ago:

Image

That play lead to side out of bounds (Denver had a foul to give) instead of an EASY dunk for Derozan.

He's an inefficient scorer who can't create for teammates, can't shoot great, has a career AST:TO ratio of about 1, and never has really shown he can play within a team concept. He can rebound and play decent D, but I don't understand why you would want someone like Gay on this team, but are strongly against signing Melo. I mean, I don't like either, but Melo > Gay is just about every facet of the game. I realize Lakers would have Melo for 5+ years which is not a good situaton to be in, but still. I don't see how Gay would help this team. He's especially a poor off-ball player and doesn't contribute much without the ball in his hands.

He's also not shown leadership qualities and has never reached (and never will) his potential. The Raptors were playing inspired basketball last night with crisp ball movement. It was clear that they were excited that Rudy the ball stopper was finally gone.

Ujiri is very sharp. I expect Toronto to be much better in the coming years. They will get a nice pick in thsi years draft. Ujiri has unloaded the unproductive, high-priced talent, positioning them to at least make inroads in FA if they want to go that way. I thought it was crazy for Denver to let him go: they are one of the few teams who have lost an "Elite" FA (Melo), and were better after the trade the GM engineered.

I question the value of cap space if you're the raptors, especially when so many other teams have it as well.

Gay makes more than 75% of gasols salary. he's making 17.8M this year, then a PO for 19.3 next year (same amount gasol is getting paid)

he's under 40% from the field and taking 19 shots a game to get his 19 points.

you can't tell me you'd want him at his salary, which is not 75% of gasols salary

No.... I'm telling you that Gay makes 75% of his salary.... where Pau makes about 15% of his....

Given a choice I'd take Gay at this point in their respective careers.... that isn't to say I want either if given just about any other choice.

I'll say this much for Gay.... he plays the other end pretty well.

As for his defense…. he's given Kobe some real trouble over the years when he's healthy. I'd say, when motivated, he can play decent defense. Inefficiency is his biggest issue as you point out. Don't discount injuries however.

I do think he may do much better with a team that has a penetrating guard and some shooters like SAC. His offensive game is much better suited for a faster paced team.

I agree with almost all of what you said…. It was a relevant statement to the others in the post I responded to.….. not an indication that Gay is a great player in my view. I will say that if I had to choose between Gay at 14M and Melo at 20M (purely hypothetical) I'd take my chances with Gay and what the 6M difference could get us given our current cap/personnel situation.
