If Brian Windhorst is reporting, then that means he's going to the Heat. I doubt he's coming here.

We already have enough AARP PG's.

Interesting choice, but I suppose that might have been the best team that wanted him.

Fake hustle.... did you see how many times he didn't recognize the situation last night? He got caught in below the free throw line at least 5 times when he is supposed to be the point transition defender....

Don't just watch his "on ball" defense.... which I agree isn't too bad... but defense is a team activity that gets lost on many here. He doesn't know what to do in a lot of respects.... Fisher fails because he can't do it.... Morris because he doesn't know what to do. It's coachable if we even do that on defense these days.....

When I see guys like Kurt Thomas, Juwan Howard, and now Derek Fisher still employed in this league it makes me think how few good basketball players there really are in the world. Either that, or a lot of players aren't able to get a shot at the NBA. C'mon, there's gotta be a dozen point guards in this world that are better than Derek Fisher who should be in this league instead.

i'd think if they needed a PG that bad they'd look at a guy like jannero pargo instead of signing fisher who's almost 40 and as we all know, brings NOTHING to the table anymore

Ah finally someone agrees with me. When people were saying that Morris plays good D I thought it seemed like fake hustle similar to watch Sasha used to do. I think his on ball D is not that great either especially when he got victimized by Deron Williams.

. Derek Fisher - G - Mavericks
Rick Carlisle said that he expects Derek Fisher to help the Mavericks "as a starter."
The Dallas Morning News calls Fisher "probably the eventual starter at point guard," and Carlisle's comments seem to indicate that Darren Collison is set to continue coming off the bench. "I think that's a great role for him right now," Carlisle said. "I really like Darren Collison as a player, and I like him even better as a person. But putting him in a position to be the starter on this team right now isn’t fair to him." Fisher averaged 4.9 points and 1.4 assists on 34.3 percent shooting (20 minutes per game) with OKC last season.

Sorry, but I don't see "fake hustle" as you call it. Hill was the Pacers leading scorer with 19 points on 7-12 (58FG%) shooting. He only scored 5 of those 19 points against Morris (on 2-5 (40FG%) shooting). So he scored 14 points at 5-7 (71FG%) while he was on Duhon. 40FG% vs 71FG%. Night and day.

Oh and in addition to actually defending the Pacers best scorer that night and actually holding him to a more reasonable FG% than Duhon, Morris also managed to mess around and come up with 3 steals in 22 minutes on the floor. He possibly could have had more if he played more minutes.

His defense wasn't the issue. The problem was that he was a complete liability on the offensive end. He couldn't manage the offense, couldn't hit a wide open shot, and worst of all, he looked like Dwight at the FT line.

He blew his responsibility at least 3 times in the second half alone to be the first man back in transition.... while that doesn't show up in the "designer stats" it was real and happened. The guys that scored may not have been "his opposite" but they scored none the less and it was his responsibility to be at the top of the circle when Kobe goes below the free throw line. That's elementary just as is Dwight's lack of boxing out on Free Throws that cost us 3 and almost 4 possessions in the 4th quarter.

He puts pressure on the ball and hustles.... that's more than we get from most of our entire team... I'll grant that because it's obvious.

My comment is more to the entire idea that a stat can somehow quantify "defensive" ability. It is not, nor ever has been, a individual part of the game. DPOY's, steals and especially blocked shots are used way to often to give someone credit for their "defense". Good defensive teams like the C's for example actually practice defense and have quantifiable schemes that delegate responsibility depending on the situation. They don't have stat leaders or DPOY's but they have good defense year in and year out that is not dependent on the personnel for the most part.

We haven't had a coach since Dunleavy that actually prioritized defense and we give it lip service most of the time.

A guy like Morris could find a place in the league as a defender with the right coaching and scheme but we have neither here IMO. He puts out effort but most of it is not directed or coordinated.... just like Sasha.... fake hustle.

Sorry, but I don't see it. There were a few mistakes he made on D, specifically not listening to Pau tell him that a pick was coming in the 1st quarter, which led to an open shot for Hill. But overall, his defense was solid. "Fake hustle" describes Sasha and Smush more than it does Morris. Smush would get steals because he would go for a suicide steal and let his man score. Sasha would "pester" people but pick up fouls in the process. Morris doesn't do any of that unless the refs are targeting him with "rookie" calls on occasion. He guards his man, does a decent job of funneling to Dwight, and getting his hands into the passing lanes. If that's "fake hustle" than I'll take it over what Duhon & Blake are giving us on D.

It's not just "stats", it's what he does overall. He stays in front of his man while at the same time he can help and recover using his speed and length. That's more than Blake, Duhon, or Nash can do for us. And so far, he's been doing a solid job of it. His mistakes, IMO are being overblown.

I agree that we haven't had a real defensive scheme implemented for awhile. Although the 3-peat Lakers did a solid job because they were vets.

I think we agree more than disagree on this.... he overplays quite a bit but he at least plays hard.

I will ask that you watch our transition defense more closely.... there are "team "responsibilities" in that regard that he didn't do on several offensive possessions. He drifted into the corner on top of MWP several times ruining the floor spacing and taking himself out of his responsibility to read where the other guard was and be the safety on transition. They broke out for 3 layups that were uncontested for the most part because of it as well.

Everyone seems to watch the ball and not notice the entire game within a game which is the movement of the players that are either not handling the ball or defending the ball. Our lack of discipline in that regard on both ends is our main issue right now. We don't move without the ball on offense and we don't rotate or read the situation on defense....
