Yao Ming won't be a dominator in the future

You can’t coach desire. Rudy T couldn’t do it, and now Jeff Van Gundy is finding that he can’t, either. Yao Ming simply does not have the fire, the will to dominate, that fueled the careers of Hakeem Olajuwon and Patrick Ewing. Perhaps it is the Chinese culture that he grew up in, one of submission and honor rather than personal gain and aggressiveness, which is causing Yao to have such a steep learning curve. Maybe he is having more trouble with the language barrier than it would seem that he is. Whatever the case, he simply does not look confident or decisive when he gets the ball in the post. He doesn’t always make a strong move to the basket right away. He too often holds the ball and looks around, which is when he winds up turning it over. Yao scores 90% of the time when he catches and immediately takes the ball to the hole. He either makes the shot or gets fouled. To date he has attempted and made more free throws than any other Rocket. The problem is that he doesn’t continue to do that throughout a 48- minute period. He does it once or twice, then goes away from it, then does it one more time, then has to sit with foul trouble.

I agree with F4L... Yao outplayed Shaq on Christmas-- he's definitely got a bright future ahead of him.

This is only his 2nd season too...

Slava laughed at the suggestion his skills might be affected by the down time. "Are you kidding?" he said. "Basketball is like ball. It's all a circle."

Yao's got an outside shot and the height advantage. But ur right joker he does seem to like that fire. But he's still young, and it's barely his 2nd year in this league. By the way, there's a language barrier too.

his problem is he's scared of dunking on a guy, he doesn't want any opponent to get embarrassed, and others will take advantage of that. He will never dominate, it's not in his nature, he is a jump shooting center, he will never bulk up enough or get strong enough.

I hope no one ever says he dominates, because Yao and dominate are oxymoron

Of course he will be dominant... Right now he has language problems, he isn't experienced player, but in years to come (or when Shaq retires:)), he will be no 1 center in the league!
