Opinion: Garnett Heading East

kevin_garnett_wallpaper.jpg“While the speculation has been rampant that Garnett was going to be moved, in reality, the Wolves never really had any reason to. What makes this draft, and upcoming off-season so critical is Garnett’s ability to opt out next summer.

The clock is ticking from now until the middle of February for the Wolves to ensure they get something in return. This upcoming lottery tonight could be a sign of good things to come, or the beginning of the end on the KG era in Minny.”

Contrary to popular belief, if KG is moved, it wouldn’t be to Los Angeles. More than likely, he will be moved to the Eastern Conference. Chicago has been the popular destination for KG as well as New York. Another rumor that started last year and has really hit a high note is Garnett to Phoenix for Marion and Kurt Thomas with the Suns also throwing in one or two of their late first round draft picks. While it does allow Minnesota to get out of Garnett’s contract, they take back an almost equal contract in Shawn Marion’s.

At least Kurt’s contract would be expiring at the end of next season and come off the books while Marion could and would possibly opt out of his deal. That would still leave the Wolves without much to show for KG except a couple of late first round draft picks. If moving Garnett is all about getting a huge salary off the books while accommodating a player that has been so good for the organization, taking back a salary like Shawn Marion’s kind of defeats the purpose.”
