Family-friendly ads?

Family-friendly ads?

Postby Kasumi on Fri Dec 25, 2009 12:22 pm

I understand the need to use ads to pay the bills, but these Evony ads are ridiculous. Close-ups of breasts are not something I want to stare at. I haven't said anything in hopes that they would eventually cycle out in favor of new ads, but they've been around for a while...

I don't use Firefox. And, like many people, I don't want to use Firefox. I use IE and don't want to see porn when I'm on CL.

I'm not exactly involved in what kind of ads CL gets for clublakers.

But in my personal opinion its nitpicking.

we don't have anything that wouldn't be considered "very usual" for the 21st century.

to call that "porn" is most definitely prude and an overreaction.

Thank you KB24@CL, I always appreciate being called a prude just because I don't want to see close-ups of women's breasts while reading basketball news.

They're not occasional - they are constant and they are pathetic. I would like to see them go away. CL is preported as a family-friendly site and those ads include pictures that the mods have told people that they can't post here - is that not a double standard???

I didn't even know these ads existed, my screen only goes so far over so that I can see half of the Chili's and Hooters ads. Scrolling over to see this though I can see the issue, the ad does pan over to the woman's breasts pretty blatantly. I wouldn't go so far as to call it porn, but I can see not wanting to see it I guess. Internet Explorer sucks by the way, not sure why you wouldn't even want to give FireFox a shot. :man1:

Well I never see adds because I run Firefox with adblock plus but I turned it off to see what you were talking about. I didn't see the add you are referring to though. Can you post a screen shot here?

Ok, I definitely agree with you. This is a family friendly site. I'm against those ads being here but I suppose the site needs funding somehow. It's kind of ironic since our forum rules don't allow posting such pictures yet we have adds showing them.

I don't think that's porn, but I absolutely agree with the general sentiment, Misti. Are you still seeing them? I use Ad-block for Firefox (because it's the BOMB; I recommend it if you CAN use it. I know some can't because they have to work with programs that require other browsers) so I don't know.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll figure out which network is delivering them and attempt to shut them off.

Just my opinion:

1. I absolutely agree that these ads are not family friendly and you have my support in this.

2. But they can not be called porn. That's not porn, period.

3. Look at the text I bolded in your post. May I know why? Firefox is much better. Why in the world would you not want to use it instead of IE is beyond me.

^^ You're right, calling it porn was utilizing poetic license for effect. They were tasteless, but not porn. I do think it's funny that the next round of ads is for cigarettes, trading one evil for another. What's next, advertising steroids?

As to the Firefox question, I am limited with the systems to use on my work laptop, we use IE at work and I prefer to use the same systems on both machines. Just makes life easier. I did try out an ad-blocker, but ended up deleting it because there were sites that I do use that it was blocking the functionality of (like MapQuest, of all things).

Alright. That actually makes sense. I use FF at work, on my home desktop, on my laptop, and my wife uses it too on her laptop. I don't think I could ever go back to IE. I use not only adblock plus, but also noscript. Which means nothing can execute on the page except if I allow it. I never see any ads, pics, videos, flash animations... except if I want to see them. I mean, it's useful, trust me. Solves so many problems instantly.

I saw the cigarette ads and figured there would be some problem. I'm not sure what can be done about this. I'll send a message to CL and see what he has to say. Some things strike me:

1. Cigarette ads are certainly more SFW than the other images.
2. Cigarettes, unlike steroids, are not illegal.
3. I still understand that as a family friendly site (which we clearly are), the E Cigarette isn't the best product to pimp.
4. Supposing the ECig is the cleanest, most family friendly option we can get: wouldn't you rather have that appear on some browsers (I see it only on my computer in my office; the others block it) than not have CL? Because it's not free to run a massive site like this.
