a "like" feature

a "like" feature

Postby MadMax on Wed Oct 26, 2011 10:52 pm

This will probably never happen, but I think having a feature where you could "like" someones post would be pretty cool.

(Yes, I obviously got this idea from facebook).

That would be a good idea.

OK then... let me ask you a question. What is your use case? So you liked someone's post and that is reflected in post's header (the same goes for unlike). Then what? How are you going to leverage that?

I can see 3 possible cases:

1. Allow sorting of the posts based on their popularity

I, personally, would be against it for several ethical and behavioral reasons, but the main reason is technical - how would you sort the posts while still maintaining the correct flow of the thread? It just doesn't make too much sense in the forum setting.

2. Allow to filter out the posts based on some arbitrary (say, defined in User Profile) border value.

That one is a bit puzzling too - are you going to skip posts based on someone else opinion? Well, IMO, it would then become a very divided ecosystem on CL - soon people will start form groups, while disliking the hell out of other groups' posts.

3. Enter the posts into some kind of "Best Post of the Month' competition.

I don't know even why.

Let me know what I might have missed. To me - the functionality seems iffy even on Facebook (what exactly is the value of it?) and even more so here.

I thought of a like feature as being a better alternative to us always quoting a post saying "this" as a way to agree.

Wow this is a thread already!

Yes, we should include one. It would reduce the amount of quoting and allow users to just "like" a post instead of " '......' :jam2: " That way more posts could fill a page....

Also, posts like this really warrant a "like" feature. (from the Gasol for KG thread locked earlier)

No they aren't. Get a f***ing life you disgusting rat. The kind of human being so desperate for attention they go online just to spread rumors is the kind of human that should ban themselves from society. Go live in the middle of a field and rid society of your useless time.

edit: and I realized that every point I had (including the one in the OP) has already been made in this thread....almost causing me to be a hypocrite :bang: lol, what a great community we have, CL :jam2:

Ya, we need to reduce this feature to lessen those " :jam2: :jam2: :jam2: :jam2: " like posts... Even a YouTube style thumbs up/down thing would be nice...

Endorse or Veto

edit: ok fine. "like" is fine, but "kudos" has a little of its own CL swag.

I'll give my kudos to kudos

This should definitely be added to the forum. I think phpbb has a "thanks" modification, but you can easily change the "thanks" to "like".

I too think this would be a good idea. In terms of use case, think of it like when you read reviews. Customer reviews are often accompanied by "Helpful" and "Not Helpful" which users can click on. So a post would have X likes or dislikes instead of helpful or not helpful.

The one down side though, is that the Like information will be tied to the original post, so, over time, it will get lost in the shuffle whereas quoting the original post bumps it to the top which I think is the goal for some.

We could also have a like count towards a reputation or something, whether that's something people would see in their profile or right under their avatar could be cool.
