This is outrageous...

This is outrageous...

Postby d.James on Sun Feb 28, 2010 3:02 pm

I have come here for five years and we have had some very spirited debates in Open Court. With regards to global warming (or climate-change) there is currently a thread running debating the merits of the scientific research. IQ is defined in Merrian-Webster as "a number used to express the apparent relative intelligence of a person." It is not a way to call someone stupid. This is scientific research and to censor it, and not censor all topics concerning scientific research, communicates to me that the opinions expressed by the moderators in the forum have become law and how they govern their forum.

The fact that this thread is locked is appaling and I will not visit or contribute to this site when they have clearly communicated such a bias. You are free to do whatever you wish to with your site, but this is not in the interest of free-speech. I would not trust that I could find impartial and relative honest opinions on this forum, therefore, I will not visit it again.

Goodbye.

The lack of civility in every and all political threads on this board simply disgusts me. I'd rather see no more of it. I honestly cannot stand policing these threads and seeing otherwise level-headed posters railing away at good people, spread all across the political compass. It's horrible for the site, makes it a terrible place to visit, is horrible for all of us as human beings, and should be done away with. Yes, I think there should be no more political discussion here. We're simply too immature to keep it civil.

Okay not sure why it was locked. Just looking at the thread currently it looks like there were some posts that probaly warranted it but, were deleted.

The goal of the moderation team is to make sure topics stay civil. The topic itself might have caused some potential controversy so the moderator might have felt that it caused potential probelms.

In any case the moderator team are unbias in terms of locking/warning/banning people. I am sorry D.James you feel that way but, at the same time you with all due respect you have zero proof to back up your claims of moderate misconduct. I hope you find an appropriate site to go too.

^^ If certain topics are off limit, that should be policy and they shouldn't be allowed from the start. Not having that policy and then locking a thread before it warrants a lock just angers people as you can see with D.James.

I've always been a fan of deleting offending posts and warning/discipling posters, not locking entire threads.

Trav, from what I've seen, the basketball related threads are FAR less civil than the political ones.

What the phrase...I cant' define porn but, I know it when I see it.

We do as mods if we see a topic that it's going to be a battle royal between the religious/non religious or politicial groups we can and will shut them down.

I am sorry that D.James or any member was upset but, in the end the mods we do what we feel is best for the site.

I think some people use their knowledge of the above to get threads closed simply because they don't agree with the subject matter.

I mean following that thinking, just about any thread regarding LeBron or Gasol should be locked at the start.

I think the fighting won't stop until people are either forced to follow rules or are removed from the site.

Hope you change your mind D.James. You add some good thoughtful posts to discussions.

IMHO, that's justified only if the thread in question gets out of hand. Unless some offensive posts were deleted from the thread d.James cited, that didn't look like one that should've been locked. But I'm not a moderator, so it's not up to me. Good luck in your endeavors, d.James, and I hope you change your mind and come back, you'll be missed.
Thanks for the sig, Jr. Kobe.

Agreed. D.James has been an insightful poster and I'd probably side with him on this one. If there was nothing in the thread to lock it then there should be no reason to lock it. No point in trying to look into the future and locking the thread because there's a "good chance" something might happen.

Many people think Lebron is a better basketball player than Kobe but if someone makes a thread about it on here it's going to cause a lot of needless fighting because some people are irrationally in love with Kobe and/or the Lakers. I don't think we should lock it, just delete the posts where there's name calling and what not. Sure that might be more work, but it's better than not being able to discuss topics. Heck maybe it's time CL gets more moderators if the problem is too much work. A lot of the mods on here are inactive or just plain busy all the time it seems.

However, I do think the thread needed to be locked, not due to the research content, but due to the inevitable path the thread would take (which had already started) where certain posters would be indirectly calling other posters "stupid", "closed-minded", etc, even if they didn't use such direct words. The moderators need to maintain a civil environment, the forums are not a free-for-all where any type of behavior goes, and I don't mind the moderators preempting and stopping what could easily have been an ugly thread.

Anyway, I do hope how you return d.James, and if not, good luck wherever you decide to post from now on.
