BDG's SPL Exclusive: Lakers vs. Mavericks [7/9/06]

The Lakers only hold the rights to the 15 players that make the team and past draft picks (like Douthit). Unless Slaughter made the NBA roster and was then sent down to D League would they hold his rights. In likelihood the Lakers will only hold the rights to 1 or 2 guys that play on their D league team.

So the Lakers probably won't keep Slaughter?

They may want to sign him to the D league team and see how he does, but they wouldn't hold his rights. After the first two games I have Slaughter on the camp invite bubble. I don't see how he can make the NBA roster though.

If we put him on our D-League team without signing him (likely), because if we have him down there, I doubt we waste a roster space on him, considering we don't have the roster space to carry him. Then he is a FA.

Anyone can offer him a contract at any point. We don't have anything preventing him from leaving.

What I would hope is that he would want to stay in Cali, be grateful that the Lakers were the team to take a gamble on him, he endures the 1 season in the D-Leage, and Mitch works it out with him where he would offer him a contract next summer if the Lakers like his progress. It's asking a lot, to turn down other teams offers for a year, but it's basically all the Lakers can offer.

Can the Lakers choose who they wan't on their D-League team or are the players assigned to them?

I'm pretty sure that since this is now LA's team, they can choose who's on it, but if they don't have someone's rights, and another team wants the player, then LA can't just say, "No, you have to go to the DLeague."
