Lakers invite Brian Roberts to Vegas

Postby JSM on Sun Jun 29, 2008 12:24 pm

Toledo Blade: Former St. John’s Jesuit and University of Dayton basketball star Brian Roberts, who was not selected in the two rounds of the NBA draft, has been invited to take part in summer league play with the Orlando Magic from July 7-11.

Roberts, 22, a 6-2 guard, said he will undergo a physical exam Wednesday in Orlando, take part in a light practice, and then participate in a mini training camp with the organization prior to summer league play.

“They called my agents and he thought this would be a good situation for me,” Roberts said of his representatives, Josh Nochimson and Jason Levien. “I’ll play in the summer games and then we’ll go from there.”

The Magic are currently light at the point-guard position, with only veteran Jameer Nelson under contract with the team. Roberts said the Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers also have invited him to their summer leagues.

WTF are the Lakers thinking? :bang: :bang:
They need to invite guys like: Gerald Green, James White, Davon Jefferson, Bryce Taylor, Demarcus Nelson, Lorenzo Mata, Julius Hodge, Chris Taft, & Dijon Thompson.

Do you really think they will find the answer for defense at point guard from Summer League invite? Some of you need to chill and assume maybe Mitch has a clue what he is doing. It is a summer league team and nothing more.

^I'll give you one little example: Quentin Ross (defensive specialist). Clippers found him on their summer league team one summer. Anything could happen. Bottomline, you wanna' bring the best players possible & see what happens, ya' just never know.

I don't think we will find any major solutions to any of our problems via the summer league invites, but that doesn't mean that we can't find a 14th or 15th man.

I don't have a problem with Brian. He's a very good scoring PG. I want to see him against better competition than the Atlantic 10 though. Plus I think he will be more of an undersized 2 at the NBA level...if he makes it to the NBA.

I'm just not sure he's up there with the upper echelon of undrafted players and I would like to bring the best of that crop, that fit our needs, to camp.

As injuries have proven a 14th or 15th man can play a role on the team. And if we don't get guys who are good enough to make the team now, stash a few of them with the D-Fenders and see what sticks.

He struggled shooting the ball yesterday with the Magic.

Here's the box score:
http://www.nba.com/media/magic/Game_3_Box_Score.pdf

6 points (1-5 FGs), 4 fouls, 1 assist, 1 rebound, 4-6 FTs in 14 minutes

HoopsWorld had a little blurb about him coming here later this week...
HoopsWorld: Dayton's Brian Roberts is on Orlando's squad and while Brian may not make the Magic roster as it seems Kevin Kruger has already earned that spot, Brian played some nice basketball and rumor has it he will head to Vegas next to play with the Lakers. Brian is on the small side physically, but his game is so polished someone should bring him to training camp.

What a bust. Speaking of busts, I wonder how Kwame would do in these summer leagues.

How can an undrafted player be a Summer League bust, especially after one game?

^ I'm only kidding. :man10:
It's called mild sarcasm, semi humor.. I failed miserably as I do far too often, lol.
It's basically just another way of saying he sucks for me, even if it doesn't make the most sense in literal terms.

Sure seems as if Lakers are really wanting this kid to do well. Seems they are higher on him than we are.

He hasn't shown me anything yet. He wasn't an out of control wreck in game 2, like he was in game one, but he still struggled with his shot and his ball handling isn't good enough for that to be his niche. Doesn't have a whole lot going for him.

i met this kids college coach tonight and was told he got a 125k contract offer from italian league team. his college coach is a really nice guy and spoke highly about the kid. i wish him well and in a few days i assume the announcement will come out if he accepts offer.
