Chinemelu Elonu, the Lakers’ lone draft pick this season, will get his chance to wear a Lakers uniform when the NBA Summer League begins Friday in Las Vegas. It could be his only chance.
Elonu, the 6-foot-10 forward from Texas A&M, is not expected to make the regular-season roster but should be in camp when the Lakers convene for the 2009-10 season.
Adam Morrison is the only other recognizable name on the Lakers Summer League entry, but there are stars lined up to play against the Lakers in their five games.
Blake Griffin, the overall No. 1 draft pick of the Clippers, is signed up to play and will be on the floor when the Lakers and Clippers play 5:30 p.m. Monday at UNLV’s Thomas & Mack Center. The Lakers open play Friday against former USC standout DeMar DeRozan and his Toronto teammates at 5 p.m. at Cox Arena.
In addition to Griffin and DeRozan, other top draft picks scheduled to be in Vegas are Memphis’ Hasheem Thabeet, Oklahoma City’s James Harden, Minnesota’s Jonny Flynn, Golden State’s Stephen Curry, New York’s Jordan Hill, and Milwaukee’s Brandon Jennings.
