Two Lakers embarass OJ Mayo in the summer league

Postby GG on Mon Jul 14, 2008 11:02 am

LAS VEGAS – O.J. Mayo dribbled between his legs once, twice, and that’s all Dwayne Mitchell needed to see. Suddenly Mitchell was ripping the ball from Mayo’s hands, racing downcourt and punching in a thunderous dunk that brought the crowd at UNLV’s Cox Pavilion to its feet.

The Memphis Grizzlies’ much-celebrated rookie had just been embarrassed by a D-Leaguer. Admire your dribble too long, even in the NBA Summer League, and you likely won’t keep it. The turnover was one of six Mayo committed Sunday evening against the Los Angeles Lakers. Mayo also had a shot thrown back by Coby Karl, rarely an indicator of greatness, even if the building’s public-address announcer mistakenly hailed the Lakers’ guard as “Kobe Bryant.”

cobys a good 6'8 compared to mayos 6'4. i mean mayo did blow by karl for that sweet reverse.

Coby isn't 6'8" he's more like 6'5"...he is long though and he's pretty athletic.

Well, at least Mayo didn't embarrass himself like Oden did last summer.

^ The same way they claimed Charles Rhodes was from Memphis State when he was from Mississippi State. There hasn't been a "Memphis State" for 14 teams.

And then in the next game they called him Derrick Rose.

Coby's a surprisingly good shotblocker, moreso due to wingspan than athleticism of course. He blocked Corey Brewer's jumpshot earlier in the year, and even had the guts to try to block Gerald Wallace's dunk in transition (of course, he got posturized and had Coby tumbling and doing backflips towards the sidelines, but still). I'm not surprised he could block Mayo; first of all, Mayo's not a freak athlete, and he's relatively the same size as Karl.

Yeah, I was impressed with Mayo when I was watching that game yesterday...

Until I noticed that he was playing against Coby Karl and D-League players and couldn't capitalize on it at all.
What's gonna happen when he plays against Bruce Bowen?

Plus, he's got seriously LOOOONNNGG arms. I believe his wingspan is 7'2", which is freaky long, so, no, it is not odd that Karl would block anyone's shot. In fact, he'll uses his length very well on the defensive end of the court.

Some of us need to take our race glasses off because if Karl was a black dude, people in here wouldn't act so shocked over things like this. It's pretty ridiculous to think that a guy whose 6'5" or 6'6" with a 7'2" wingspan wouldn't be capable of blocking shots.
