HoopsWorld: Jerryd Bayless better get comfy in Las Vegas. He's going to be there a while.
With summer league coming to a close today, the Portland Trail Blazers rookie guard is officially the latest member of the 2008 USA Basketball Select Team it was announced today by USA Basketball.
Bayless will begin practicing with the Select Team – a squad comprised of some of the leagues best young talent including fellow Blazer LaMarcus Aldridge, Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City), Andre Iguodala (Philadelphia) and Derrick Rose (Chicago) among others – as they help prepare the 2008 USA Men's Senior National Team for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
While the Select Team roster was released last week, a roster spot was left vacant for those at the Las Vegas Summer League to strive for. And after appearing in four games, Bayless easily secured the slot. The 11th overall pick in the 2008 NBA draft, Bayless was the top scorer at summer league averaging 29.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game, while shooting 48.5 % from the field. But this isn't the first time the Blazers rookie's name will be associated with a USA basketball team.
The Select squad begins training today in Las Vegas and is expected to scrimmage against the USA Senior National Team this coming week (July 21-24), as they prepare for a meeting against the Canadian National Team at the Thomas & Mack Center in Vegas at the end of the week (July 25).
ESPN: First-round draft picks Kevin Love and Robin Lopez were added Saturday to the select team of young players that will scrimmage against the U.S. Olympic team this week.
Both players were chosen after strong performances in the NBA summer league. Love, picked fifth by Memphis and traded to Minnesota on draft night, has averaged 20.7 points and 15 rebounds in three games for the Timberwolves.
Lopez, the No. 15 pick, averaged 16 points and 7.7 rebounds in his first three games for Phoenix.
