TOKYO -- The United States will face Puerto Rico in its first game of the basketball world championships while defending champion Serbia-Montenegro will play Nigeria.
The United States, the tournament's top-seeded team, was drawn in Group D on Sunday along with Puerto Rico, Slovenia, Italy, China and Senegal.
Serbia-Montenegro, formerly Yugoslavia, has a record five world titles and is in Group A with Athens Olympic gold medalists Argentina.
The 24-team 2006 FIBA Men's World Championship will be held Aug. 19-Sept. 3 in Japan.
The American team has had mixed results at the world championship. The United States last won gold in Toronto in 1994 but placed a disappointing sixth at the 2002 tournament in Indianapolis.
