USA drops to #2 in FIBA World Rankings???

how the hell did this happen?

we were ranked #1 before the olympics.....then win the gold and drop to #2?? :man3: :man3: :man3:

Becuase its a point system and Argentina has had much more recent sucess. Its cool we the champs
For what it's worth, the Lakers also clinched the Pacific Division, an achievement Bryant dismissed by saying "We don't hang divisions." No, only the big NBA championship banners are considered wall-worthy for the Lakers.

im guessing the 02 worlds really bumped us down

02 World Championships:
USA - 6th place
Argentina - 2nd

04 Olympics:
USA - 3rd
Argentina - 1st

06 Worlds:
USA - 3rd
Argentina - 4th

08 Olympics:
USA: 1st
Argentina: 3rd

The US was ranked #1 before the Olympics...they didn't lose a game, beat ARG and ESP and won gold...someone needs to explain how they drop.

This reminds me of the FIFA world rankings in soccer. They are also based on long term accomplishments relative to one another. So there was a period when the US and Mexico did well in the North American region; then the two countries were ranked as high as 6th and 7th in the world, respectively, and there's no way in my mind that the US had the 6th best national team in the world at that time. And neither was Mexico that good. It was just that weird way the rankings are constructed. Realistically the two countries are probably between 12th and 16th in the world depending on who you like ahead of them.

Its like the ATO entry system...its a garbage ranking.

In soccer the ranking is pretty horrendous as well...same for club rankings in soccer...

Yea, the USA was either 5 or 6 going into the last World Cup. Italy, who won, was somewhere in the 40's.

The points come from the tournaments spanning the last 8 years. What happened was the 2000 Olympics results were removed and replaced with the 2008 Olympics. Since the US won gold in both events they did not receive any additional points. However, Argentina had 0 pts from the 2000 Olympics since they didn't compete and now they have 30*5 = 150 pts from earning the Bronze in the 2008 Olympics.

End result, US +0 and Argentina +150, which was enough to push them to #1 since the US has struggled before the Redeem Team.
