D12 Discussion: Dwightmare over! (1139)

Re: Dwight Discussion: 25/15/5/5 - 1st since 'Shaq in 97 (938)

^ Well I already addressed the "Phil never coached defense" talking point in a post above.

And karacha, we'll just have to call it a disagreement. I think it would be noticeably better. Not elite, but absolutely noticeably better. Injuries are valid, but there have been teams (like some of the Spurs squads) that were old and could still play defense with the best of them, so Im not buying that an old team automatically means you cant play defense, not for a second.

As I said earlier though I dont want to derail this thread, we can shift to the Pringles thread.

Sure, I respect that. Post in the MDA thread - just copy and paste your last post and quote one of my posts if you wish, and we can let people discuss this further.

^I'm not tossing out Phil in comparison just saying while everyone is complaining about Coach D not practicing Defense neither did Phil. In fact, his last few years here this very board was a flame blasting him for losing his mind, not coaching a lick of d and needing to be replaced by someone with a clue.

Fans are pulling off the coach excuse card for 2 seasons because some don't want to admit the roster is full of washed up players and needs to be retooled at a 70-75% rate...

Same can be said about players. In which case we should all just stop posting right? Or

I'm with ya..... Veterans that have had tons of success don't really need leadership or motivation from a coach..... If we were a young and talented team the coach is far more important IMO

For us it's not easy to look beyond the myopic view of having 4 HOF players to the fact that none of them have their respective HOF games consistently anymore....... So it's got to be the coach.

This seasons failure is on whomever rolled the dice on this unfinished roster IMHO....

LOL. We are all the most knowledgeable people looking from the outside. Just look at how easily we can call a player stupid, garbage or useless for not making the play that we, ourselves, would of for sure made had we been on the team.

If I remember correctly, the last game Dwight had in Sac was one to forget. He's been playing good since the All-Star Break, though. We need a big game from him tonight.

The thing about this team is that NO ONE is in their prime. Nash is old and hasn't been healthy, Pau is a shell of himself, Dwight isn't the same Dwight this season, and Kobe has killed us defensively. Then you look at the role players and either they aren't good enough to make a significant impact (like 2011 Odom) or they are past their prime.

How can you expect to win in this league when not a single player in your roster is playing at their best level? It doesn't happen

Heat: LeBron possibly having a top 3 season ever, Wade playing better than last year, loads of role players hitting 3s at a high rate

Thunder: Durant+Westbrook in their prime

Spurs: Parker having his best season, role players always killing it for this team

Go down the list for all the best teams they all have players either in their prime or on the cusp. Not only do we not have that, we don't have young+athletic players to keep up with teams that punish our best players for being old and slow. And the real deal killer is that we don't have a good defensive system in place like the Celtics did so we really have no clue what we're doing on that end. Just too many flaws

He did everything today. What a monster! Without his effort on D... ugh, I don't want to think about it. Yeah, if his offensive game was more polished, he'd be unstoppable, but he's still good enough to be the best 5 in the game.

Can't say enough about his effort and activity. Game changer.

His FTs still make me cringe, and he has the occational lapse, but man was he great tonight

No doubt the player of the game against the Queens. He just played with springs in his legs and I always love that he gets a block right after missing free throws. Wants to make up for missing them.

I'll soften this a bit - I'll just say that I think that's too easy a take on the situation. It's not like he played out of his mind because he was involved. He was very active tonight, and the Lakers looked to get him involved. Not sure that one was directly and solely responsible for the other.

Every one wanted PJax back but seems to forget he NEVER coached Defense either. Kind of double-standardish isn't it?

It is a double standard but a legit one. PJax earned the right to coach however he wanted with his 11 rings. D'Antoni has not earned anything yet. PJax also coached an offensive system that controlled the tempo of the game on offense to an extent that tended to cover most defensive deficiencies. D'Antoni claimed that his O system would control the game as well, but has not done so yet.

I agree. I'd say his improved effort was more a consequence of him getting healthier and in better shape as the season progresses plus the importance of the game..
I would actually like to see a "touches" stat on the post, I don't think he really had many more tonight than other nights.. He wasn't getting stripped and he made some strong moves, plus the pick and roll was working with Kobe and with Pau so he got a lot of lobs and dumps to dunk it. His activity on the glass was phenomenal

Still nitpicking here, but I wish he would dunk everything when he's within 2 feet of the basket.
