Kevin Garnett Could Consider Signing With Lakers

Image

By Larry Brown May 29, 2012

Kevin Garnett is currently the fourth-highest salary earner in the NBA, but he’ll be a free agent after the season and likely to sign for far less than the $21.2 million he’s making. There have been reports that the Nets will be interested in signing him, and it’s possible he and the Lakers could come to an agreement.

During an interview with Mark Willard on 710 ESPN Radio in LA over the weekend, Stephen A. Smith discussed the possibility of KG signing with the Lakers and said that’s something the team should explore.

Smith pointed out that Garnett lives in Southern California in the offseason and that he’s friends with Kobe Bryant, so he believes it’s a possibility, especially if Pau Gasol is gone.

Strengthening the speculation is Garnett’s admission last year that he was pretty close to signing with the Lakers as a free agent in 2007.

Smith also says the Lakers would consider bringing back Lamar Odom. He says Odom “desperately” wants back with the Lakers, and that Mike Brown desperately wants him too. Smith says Odom would take the veteran minimum to return to the Lakers.

There were some other good nuggets in the interview such as the confirmation that Dwight Howard doesn’t want to come to Lakers, and the belief that Deron Williams will strongly consider remaining with the Nets.

KG is still an asset and will be able to help a team for at least another season, so it would make sense for the Lakers to be interested. I just know that wouldn’t sit well with Boston fans if he left to go play for the enemy, but it’s not like they haven’t seen that before.

I've been on this bandwagon for quite some time. He's still got game left in the tank, my only concern would be his health.

I like the idea of bringing KG in. It would allow us to move Pau and address other needs on the team, while getting better at the starting PF spot on the cheap.

Off topic but....

Smith also says the Lakers would consider bringing back Lamar Odom. He says Odom “desperately” wants back with the Lakers, and that Mike Brown desperately wants him too. Smith says Odom would take the veteran minimum to return to the Lakers.

Mike Brown didn't want him at the beginning of the season because he didn't fit IIRC. Now he's desperate and wants him back? :man3:

Doesn't add up.

If we can bring in both those guys this summer and address the PG and bench deficiencies with Pau then we're heavy favorites again hands down.

What Brown has to do is really limit Kobe and KG to about 35 minutes per game so that we can go into the postseason clicking on all cylinders. Defensively, Artest, KG and Drew as our frontline is ridiculous. You have LO and Sess who both can playmake and run a speed game coming off the bench with some youth and our bench becomes instantly fortified.

Pau for Lowry and Martin. KG for mini-MLE. Re-sign Sessions, Ebanks, and Hill. Sign LO for the minimum when he's eligible to return.

Lowry / Sessions
Bryant / Martin
World Peace / Ebanks
Garnett / Odom / McRoberts
Bynum / Hill

Do it Mitch.

LO won't wait until December to sign with us, but we'll be getting Scola from Houston also, so it's ok.

KG would be a perfect fit for us.. I just got done posting about him in the free agency thread. Maybe we'll get lucky & Nash & Allen will come get a couple rings too =)

I'd take KG.... No to LO however.... If he's come here for the Mini-MLE that would solve a few problems and allow us to trade Mc Roberts for back court help.....

Eric Pincus, in his chat, when asked about the LO rumor said that he thought there was no interest from the Lakers.....

This.

If you have the option to bring in Odom & Garnett, you trade Gasol for an impact player (preferably a PG).

In other words, I'd love to do this ...

And don't forget that Garnett can play backup Center if need be.

That would be the idea off season for us IMO. I'd be surprised if Houston doesn't make us take Scola back, though...

Do not want KG. He has like one year left in him. and he is a d-bag, as a fan I would not support him
Every time I begin to ask, "Is he really as great as I think he is?" ...He proves that he is.
Every time I begin to wonder...He proves it...That is why I won't lose hope in him.
You know who I am talking about.

That old man put up 16 / 8 / 3 this regular season and elevated his game to 20 / 11 / 2 in the playoffs. All while bringing it defensively.

KG is a beast defensively, he's competitive, passionate, and still has some of game left in him. I just don't know about signing him, though. We get older at the 4 postion, and he's not a long term solution. I wouldn't mind if we can find relegate to the bench or find somebody else that KG can groom once he retires. Other than that, I just wouldn't want to get older. Kobe has 2 years left, maximum. We have to start preparing for his exodus by preparing now by rebuilding this team around Bynum. KG, a great player, just doesn't fit that direction of the team we need to go in; however, I'm not Mitch, and if he's cheap enough, the FO might just sign him...

Reminds me of Scottie Pippen that one year with the Blazers. They were on the cusp, the year before. Added Pippen, almost won 60-games in the regular season and were 8-minutes away from coming back from a 3-1 deficit in the western finals. They just ran out of gas down the stretch, but Pippen tied the series with his defense (disrupting our offense).

I’d always thought that Garnett was Pippen of this past era, so I can’t help but draw that comparison.

Wouldn't mind having Garnett but don't think he'll come. All this talk about Boston rebuilding, but really, what free agent is going to sign there? They've got plenty of cap room and no one to give it to. I'm sure they'll reup KG for another year or two so he care retire a Celtic.

pau for Iggy + pick and sign KG. KG will fit well with bynum. He has a better shot then pau. A players shot is the last to go with age. Iggy solves the SF issue. Its a realistic solution to a few problems.
