On Wednesday, NBA teams were allowed to contact agents for the first time since June 30, the day before the lockout commenced. Executives were given the opportunity to work the phones and express interest in upcoming free agents ten days before those players can start signing with teams.

One player that came up often in conversations was Jamal Crawford. He’s arguably the best shooting guard in this year’s free agent class and one of the best pure scorers available. After averaging 14.2 points off of the Atlanta Hawks’ bench last season, Crawford is receiving plenty of interest around the league.

A number of teams made calls to Crawford’s camp on Wednesday including the New Jersey Nets, New Orleans Hornets, Chicago Bulls, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks, Phoenix Suns and Portland Trail Blazers, according to sources close to the situation.

Because he has played a number of roles throughout his career, he is attracting interest from a wide spectrum of teams. Up-and-coming teams see him as a reliable starter who instantly improves their offense and contenders see him as the perfect sixth man, as he demonstrated during his stint with the Hawks.

Crawford was recruited by a number of players during the offseason at charity games and training sites. LeBron James and LaMarcus Aldridge even made pitches on Twitter, which led to speculation that he could sign in Miami or Portland.

With so many teams expressing interest, Crawford will have a number of options to choose from when free agency begins on December 9.

Surely he will demand more than we can offer. I really don't see this happening.

Bottom line: The Lakers will be listed as "interested in" every player mentioned.

Would be nice to have for instant offense off the bench. Unfortunately, I don't think playing for a winner, taking on a lesser role, and taking less money are high on his list right now.

Probably not gonna happen, but please let this happen.

Crawford and Howard, a serviceable player or two and then call it a wrap.

Do it Mitch!!! :jam2:

lol. if i'm crawford, i've got one more payday. if nj is offering more than the MLE, i'm taking it, contention be damned. you can always get traded later.

and yes, miami and the lakers can't possibly sign everyone. especially given that neither has much money to spend. then again, i'm convinced riley's a cheater. he probably offered crawford 1 million in salary and shadow ownership of a car dealership.

If we get any of the names that have been mentioned I will be excited. They are all players that can really help our team. Hopefully one of them works out!

I've always thought he'd be a great fit for our team. Instant scoring off the bench at the guard position. But as always I just don't think it's a realistic possibility. I don't see how we have the money to make it work.

Why are people assuming he'd come off the bench? He can easily start at PG.

^^ ESPN, Hoopsworld and all the other outlets that cover the NBA need to get their site visit and click counts back up to mid-season levels...... the lockout has put a dent in their revenue stream as well.......

I guess the good way to look at it is that at least Crawford's agent took our call because he's no dummy. He knows that all that we can offer him is our mini MLE so at least Crawford's agent has him thinking down that road.

Come get you a ring Jamal, you've been making money and playing for crappy teams all your career, why not come play for a legit contender and take less money.

First thought that popped in my head when I read about this the other day: With what money?

We reached out to him and his agent reached out to the "end call" button on his phone.

Of course all the contenders want a year-in-year-out 6th man of the year candidate. Most don't have the bankroll to acquire him though.

not happening. besides i would much rather have the younger, less flashy, better defending, more efficient Arron Afflalo if we were to spend on another wing.
