I gotta give some props to Jim Buss and Mitch on this one. They actually got this guy to resign by refusing to go with a team option (which would have been ridiculous). By getting the resignation they don't have to pay him at all.

Big move to get a new coach and not have to double pay for a fired coach. Lets see if their magic wand extends to getting Nash to do the same thing.

Steve Kerr is based on the west coast and may use the Lakers to leverage a lucrative coaching deal with NY....or he might just be our next coach (triangle redux with both Kobe and Pau still within the deck for the next couple of years)?

Not sure if I would want Kerr, but I'm sure that will play out this summer.

Marc J. Spears: ex-NBA coach Lionel Hollins has interest in the Lakers head coach opening, a source said. Hollins coached Memphis to West Finals last season

Marc J. Spears: Former NBA coach Stan Van Gundy is not expected to pursue the Lakers coach opening, a source said.

EDIT: and right on cue...

Ben Higgins: SOURCE: @SteveKerrTNT would be interested in speaking to the Lakers about their now vacant head coaching position.

I honestly would not want Kerr. He couldn't even cut it as a general manager with the Suns let alone coach a team. The last thing we need is another former member of the Suns.

Ah, pride, one of the seven deadly sins. D'Antoni thought he was better than he is and deserved that guaranteed year and was willing to give up his job and millions because of the insult of not getting the support and confidence in his work from his employer. Never mind that he has flamed out in his last two gigs, both in the biggest media markets. There's no guarantee he'll get another head coaching job anytime soon. Then again, in the NBA, bad coaches have nine lives.

Mike Trudell: The Lakers declined to pick up the option year (2015-16) on Mike D’Antoni’s contract, as D’Antoni and his agent had requested. D’Antoni met with Mitch Kupchak and Jim Buss at the team’s facility, where the conversation resulting in D’Antoni resigning took place.

Also, it seems like the resigning was a face saving move for both sides.

Kerr was doing fine as a GM, Sarver just didnt want to pay him, thats why he resigned. Kerr is someone you want. He is young and new. I would go Kerr or Ollie. No more of the old guard. Its time to start fresh completely.

I'm a bit late to the party, but I'm glad this happened as soon as it did.

We'll have plenty of time to research coaching candidates before the free agency period starts.

I'm very interested to see what the Bulls do with Thibs now that the season is over.

Hollins knows what he's doing. I'd be OK with him taking over as a head coach.

In his first year, he traded Shawn Marion for a declining Shaq. First round exit. Traded Diaw, and Bell after that. Phoenix's best years were put together by Colangelo not Kerr. NO to anymore former Suns!! Nash didnt work, D'Antoni didnt work and Kerr will not work either.

If Clips fizzle out against GS in the 1st round and Slumlord Billionaire decides to play hardball in selling the team, Doc Rivers could also emerge as a candidate.

Great news. Not in-love with Kerr; I do like Vogel (if he's available) and Hollins; maybe even go with an assistant...Quin Snyder comes to mind...bottom-line, though, NAIL THIS HIRE.

Fantastic!!! That means that it wasn't Pringle's decision really. The FO didn't budge on an extension as they shouldn't have

Also, for all the Mitch detractors, we don't really know where Mitch fell on the extension, so it might have been Mitch that said no, might have been Jimmy, might have been both!

BREAKING NEWS: There was a typo in Ramona Shelburne's original report. Mike D'antoni did not resign. He re-signed. Mike D'antoni signs guaranteed 10 year contract to remain Los Angeles Lakers coach.
