Ric Bucher thinks the Lakers should trade Kobe

Does anyone know what his relationship is with Kobe? Interesting that he said the Lakers are more interested in saving money then building a championship team. That's a complaint of most fans and Kobe himself after the Lakers / Suns playoff loss in 08.

I'm not suggesting Kobe wants to be traded, but could he be a voice for Kobe leading up to the trade deadline to acquire the necessary parts?

He is Kobe's closest friend in the media. Other than Stephen A. Smith.

matching salary would be really difficult in a trade for Kobe

Sounded kind of strange to me as well. It almost seems like by saying "Maybe they should explore trading Kobe" he was taking a dig at Jim Buss. Alot of the things he said are things that Ive seen members post here as criticism of Jim before.

No one is dumb enough to seriously suggest this, so I just think there has to be more to this.

Not really

Jason Kidd, Jason Terry, mahimi gets a deal done salary wise. It's also what I'd want the lakers to do if they decided to trade him. You be fair to Kobe and to the lakers

Kobe gets to compete for a title with dirk and the lakers grab 24 million in expirings which gives a jump start at rebuilding. Hell if you can find a way to trade pau you'd have enough room for deron and probably Eric Gordon

Forget that idea now, however if Kobe is expecting a maximum deal at which point he will be 37 years old...and you can get some great value in return, you do it. Obviously I would prefer Bryant retire a Laker, but that's really up to him. Do not want to max him out too, when we have to max out Bynum when that time comes.

jlkr wrote:I would actually consider it more likely that the Lakers use the amnesty clause on Kobe than trade him.

Or phrased in other words, trading Kobe is dang near impossible. Have to remember no team will give up so much for an aging superstar who doesn't have many years left at his current level. Further, what if the Lakers don't want to take back so much salary for Kobe given the new luxury taxes? Given those taxes and that the 2013-14 season is the first year they kick in, if the Lakers are in a breakup mode that summer, then I could see them letting Kobe go in order to rebuild around Bynum. Let me modify that by saying I think it's more likely they use the clause on MWP or Gasol. And I've thought it's possible the team never uses it; they'll find other ways to unload these players.

I agree that a Kobe trade, even if he approved it, does the Lakers little good financially, because they'd have to bring back so much salary and whatever they got would likely take one or more years to get rid of - ala the Shaq trade. If the Lakers were audacious enough to get rid of Kobe, they'd better have something up their sleeves to excite fans, and a year or more to work off the salary brought backwhile playing mediocre ball would have fans rioting in the streets.

However, amnestying Kobe allows the Lakers to be instant players in the free agent market, without having to wait for high salaried, medicore player contracts to expire. If the Lakers were to amnesty Kobe, but field an instant winner with exciting young talent, fans might be back sooner than you'd expect.

Any move involving Kobe would be a huge gamble, but I'm guessing that the Lakers don't amnesty Luke, MWP or any other low salaried player, preferring to keep it in their pocket against possible future need when the really punitive tax goes into effect.

Charley Rosen aka Phil Jackson's mouthpiece says hi! So it is possible Kobe is using Bucher to send a message.

1. No trade clause contract.

2. Team isn't close to rebuilding mode.

3. Bryant is still an elite level superstar.

4. You don't trade someone like Bryant who has done so much for the Lakers franchise and city of L.A.

bucher is one of the last media persons to call kobe the best player in the nba

the way he mentioned the odom trade, the tax, the hiring of brown without kobe's blessing, the way jim buss wants to rid phil jackson from the franchise...

You are right. He was basically saying if you aren't 100% committed to building a championship contender why not trade the guy?

That's what I got from it.

I agree with possibly trading Kobe even though its unlikely, but that Gasol trade idea for Scola and Lowry was a terrible idea.
